Offer Description

The Computational Fluid & Structural Mechanics group (CFSMgroup) https://www.cfsmgroup.com/  at the University of Calgary has an open fully-funded Ph.D. and M.Sc. position in Numerical Modeling of Wind Farms. This project is a part of ongoing activities within newly-created IEA Wind Task 57 "Joint Assessment of Models" led by NREL. Dr. Korobenko is the Canadian lead on this project. This project might also include research internship at NREL and DLR.

The project focuses on developing advanced numerical tools for wind farm modeling in complex environmental terrains and atmospheric flows. During this process, fundamental questions related to wake-structure interaction, wake mitigation strategies and wake control, effect of the atmospheric stability, will be explored. During the project the application of ROM and physics-informed NN will be also explored. Student will be working with the in-house code for multi-fidelity simulations of wind turbines.

The main responsibilities will be to:

  • couple different modules of the code to perform simulation of the wind turbines in complex terrain interacting with stratified flows
  • verification and validation of the coupled code
  • couple existing in-house code with weather models (e.g. WRF)
  • perform simulation on HPC clusters
  • pre- and post-processing of the results
  • work with field test data for validation (e.g. from AWAKEN)

The potential candidates should have:

  • a strong background in numerical methods and fluid mechanics
  • familiarity with Linux
  • experience in developing numerical models, codes, and computation algorithms
  • experience with CFD using FEM and/or FVM
  • strong hands-on experience with computing in one of the programming languages (e.g. Fortran, C/C++, Python, or other languages)
  • familiarity with at least one mesh generation tool (Gmsh, ANSA, Pointwise, or other)
  • strong interest and self-motivation to perform cutting-edge research and conquer challenges in real-world engineering and to publish high-impact papers.

Experience with parallel computing (MPI, CUDA) is beneficial.

Position is available no later than September 2024 ((the actual start date can be negotiated)). Please send to Dr. Artem Korobenko ([email protected] )

  • up-to-date CV
  • unofficial transcripts
  • unofficial English language test results (if applicable)
  • two-page cover letter.  In your cover letter, please include projects you worked on and a short proposal (few paragraphs) for the potential research topic (around wind turbine modeling) that you would like to work on during your program at the University of Calgary.

Please ensure you submit all required documents. Only qualified candidates will be contacted for online-interview.

Due to the nature of the project and collaboration the position is open for applicants from Canada, EU-countries, USA, Australia, Japan and UK.
