Reporting to the Manager, Student Learning Centre & Libraries, this position is responsible for providing system administration and technical support for the library’s electronic discovery service (Alma Primo / Page 1+) and database functionality, including the oversight and notification to staff for all system upgrades and scheduled downtime.

The incumbent acts as liaison between vendors, OCLS (Ontario College Library Services) and the Library for problem resolution and enhancement requests and acts as the Library’s representative to the related provincial user groups. The incumbent oversees the development of the library technical infrastructure and all aspects of electronic resource management and is responsible for researching, implementing and delivering new technologies and applications (e.g. federated searching, virtual reference, video streaming and integrating existing and new databases.)

The incumbent is part of the team that performs library desk duties including circulation (borrower services) and reference services (research assistance), assists students with questions about college software and troubleshoots equipment problems or requests work orders if needed.

The incumbent will demonstrate strong leadership and relationship building skills, be goal oriented, be able to deal with conflicting priorities, has a keen eye for detail, and possesses excellent communication skills. The incumbent will also be responsible for staying current on research and assessing trends and technologies related to best practices in the field of library science.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Coordinates the management and delivery of electronic resources for the college, including the uploading of new resources (databases, e-journals, ebooks, etc.) to the library’s online discovery service. Removes expired and cancelled items. Ensures smooth operations of online discovery service and performs maintenance such as periodic software upgrades. Contact for all technical issues with proxy server. Escalates to ITS, OCLS or vendor as needed;

Contact for library eResources-related issues involving remote access, on-site access, and functionality of the library’s online discovery service;

Collaborate with Ontario College Library Services (OCLS) staff in the ongoing management and support of electronic collections;

Develop expertise and maintain current awareness of emerging trends and best practices in resource access and discoverability;

Problem solves and troubleshoots technical issues as library staff, incumbent or any other source identifies them. Coordinates with library staff and ITS to resolve issues. Works with vendors to track and resolve issues that cannot be addressed in house. Provides regular reports to staff and users concerning reported, pending, and resolved issues. Actively monitors listservs to stay informed of maintenance and outages which will affect eResource access;

Tests system upgrades and enhancements in development environments and coordinates testing with other library staff. Ensures new features, interface changes, and other upgrades are communicated effectively and in a timely manner to library staff and users. Maintains close contact with vendors on upgrade and enhancement plans.

Required Qualifications:

Minimum of two (2) year diploma or equivalent in Library and Information Technology;

Minimum of three (3) years practical experience in an academic library setting;

Minimum of three (3) years experience specifically with eResource management, online discovery services (preferably Alma), proxy servers, working with multiple vendors and publishers, and working a consortium;

Understanding the nature of scholarly publishing, license agreement language, and copyright in an academic library setting;

General knowledge of accounting, payment reconciliation, and eResource purchasing cycles;

Ability to communicate effectively with audiences of varying degrees of technical knowledge;

Ability to analyze/solve problems and exercise judgment in resolving or troubleshooting complex technical problems;

Excellent computer skills, including: Advanced Excel for budgeting purposes, MS Office Suite, and other library-related systems;

Ability to work independently, organize workflow, prioritize tasks and complete projects with minimal direction;

Must be self-motivated, and self-directed.
