Position Description:

The Department of Pediatrics, Division of Gastroenterology at McGill University invites applicants for a full-time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff as a Clinician-Scientist at the rank of Full, Associate or Assistant Professor (Clinical). The rank will be determined according to the chosen candidates’ qualifications and experience. This position is a contract faculty position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The Department of Pediatrics is a leader in academic medicine, and our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs across our teaching hospitals. The Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) is one of McGill’s major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec.  All pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties are represented at the MCH.

The Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology is a clinically strong group. We currently have 5 full-time McGill faculty with expertise in diverse areas including inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatic disease, liver disease, intestinal failure, aero-digestive disorders, polyposis syndromes and celiac disease. Strongly committed to multi-disciplinary care, the Division provides both outpatient and inpatient consultation to all areas of the hospital. The physicians work closely alongside our clinical nurses and nutritionists dedicated to Pediatric Gastroenterology (GI). The Division also has a state-of-the-art pediatric endoscopy suite providing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in addition to a wireless capsule endoscopy program. The Division has an active Royal College Accredited Pediatric GI residency program and is involved in the teaching of medical students and pediatric residents as well as programs for continuing professional development. Division members have extensive implication in teaching and are involved in diverse scholarly activities at the hospital and the university as well as nationally and internationally. The cohesive team is dedicated to clinical excellence, teaching, research and innovation.
Job Duties:

The successful candidate will be an active physician member of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, MUHC. Candidates are expected to share equally in on-call weekend duties in Pediatric Gastroenterology. All clinician-scientists are expected to cover the consult service 6 weeks per year, hold 1-2 half-day outpatient clinics per week when not on service, participate in endoscopy, and attend division meetings. Supervision of house staff (Fellows, residents and medical students) is required for both the consult service and in external clinics.

As a clinician-scientist, the successful candidate will become a member of the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) joining one of the eight active research programs at the RI-MUHC. Fundamental scientists are affiliated with the Centre for Translational Biology, while clinical scientists are affiliated with the Centre for Outcomes Research and Evaluation. Candidates will be expected to commit 50%-75% of their time to research.

Applicants will be expected to demonstrate the ability to independently initiate, conduct, and manage a research program and must present an outline of their planned research program and needs for start-up funding. Clinician-scientists are expected to apply for external salary support from the FRQ-S and other appropriate agencies, and to eventually obtain external operating grants for their research.  Applicants with a research focus in inflammatory bowel disease may also be eligible for research support through the Bruce Kaufman Chair and are encouraged to learn more about this opportunity here .

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

Candidates must:

  • hold an MD degree or equivalent;
  • have postgraduate clinical training in Pediatrics;
  • have completed specialty training in Pediatric Gastroenterology with certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent);
  • hold or be eligible for licensure to practice medicine from the Collège des médecins du Québec;
  • possess excellent leadership and strong communication skills;
  • have a minimum of 2 years of dedicated research training; a postgraduate degree (e.g. MSc or PhD)
  • be fluent in English or French with a working knowledge of the complimentary language.
