Position Summary : Gain practical field and greenhouse research experience working at the McGill Emile A. Lods Agronomy Research Centre (https://www.mcgill.ca/plant/regional/agronomy ) as an integrated member of Dr. Valerio Hoyos-Villegas’s Pulse Breeding and Genetics Research Laboratory at the McGill MacDonald Campus (www.pulsebreeding.ca ). As a Field Operations Assistant, you will work with a team of researchers to collect phenotypic and agronomic data from several experimental fields growing different varieties of chickpeas and common beans, such as red kidney beans and black beans. This data will help us determine which pulse varieties perform the best under the climatic conditions found in Quebec. The end-goal of this multi-year project is to release the best performing plant varieties to farmers in Quebec and Canada.
Your Tasks :

  • Preparing seeds that will be planted in our research fields in early June.
  • Collecting a diverse array of phenotypic data from these research fields over the course of the summer.
  • Weeding, maintaining, and harvesting pulse crops.
  • Processing and cleaning harvested seeds.
  • Collecting and analyzing key agronomic traits from the harvested seed such as determining seed yield, and measuring seed moisture and protein content.
  • In our experimental greenhouse, gain hands-on experience with plant breeding by performing bi-parental crosses between the best performing pulse varieties.
  • Helping perform experiments in the laboratory, such as running PCRs and DNA extractions.
  • As part of an integrated member of our research team, taking part in weekly research meetings where we will discuss the most recent research in the field.

Minimum Education and Experience : Prior field or greenhouse experience and knowledge of the subject are desirable but not necessary, and driver’s license is an asset.
