Department summary

The Faculty of Engineering is seeking a passionate and experienced safety advocate to assist in the development, implementation, and ongoing execution of our overall operational safety plan.

Position summary

Working as the Faculty Safety Advisor, you will to contribute to the smooth, efficient and safe operation of Faculty of Engineering spaces and get to work closely with a wide range of support staff, faculty, vendors and students. 

Reporting to the Senior Safety & Risk Management Analyst, you will need to have a passion for educating others on safety and risk management, and a solid grasp of policy development. Are you the effective and collaborative person that the Faculty of Engineering is looking for?

Duties

  • Conduct safety and risk management sessions for lab managers/lab supervisors/department techs/principle investigators to cover all university of Alberta (U of A) and Alberta occupational health and safety (OH&S) requirements.
  • Track laboratory/research space compliance with the engineering safety management program (EHSMS), including managing and maintaining the safety database and compliance matrix.
  • Contribute to the creation of operational safety policies and procedures (such as fire warden program, evacuation, lock-down, critical incident response, etc.)
  • Schedule and conduct laboratory inspections/audits annually for all faculty of engineering laboratory spaces/machine shops. 
  • Conduct incident investigations for incidents including property damage, near misses, minor injury incidents, etc.
  • Organize Faculty Safety Committee meetings quarterly, maintain logs and present compliance data. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (A degree in Engineering or Science preferred)
  • Excellent soft skills such as communication (written and oral), teamwork, problem solving, adaptability, work ethic, positive attitude and time management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity and experience with the following
    • Federal, provincial, municipal acts, regulations, codes, standards, bylaws and guidelines associated with occupational, health and safety and hazardous materials
    • Regulatory and compliance management
    • Hazard assessment and control
    • Incident investigation procedures and report writing
    • Engineering project management or equivalent (ie. PMP)
    • Safety & Loss management
    • Certifications such as TDG, WHMIS, First Aid, construction safety
    • Fire extinguisher training
    • Chematix
    • Sitecore, Cascade CMS, web content development
    • Knowledge in safety related tools, instrumentation and test equipment
  • Holds a Canadian Risk Manager (CRM) designation (or in process)
