Working for The Centre for Teaching and Learning

The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) supports instructors and programs to develop engaging and meaningful learning experiences for their students by inspiring, empowering, modeling, and connecting excellent teaching at the University of Alberta. CTL is a University wide service unit committed to improving university teaching and building a culture of teaching at the U of A. More information about CTL programming can be found here .

Position 

Reporting to the Vice-Provost (Learning Initiatives), the Executive Director provides strategic leadership for CTL. The Executive Director plays a pivotal role in fostering a University culture in which evidence-informed teaching practices are highly valued by establishing, promoting, and maintaining university-wide programs and processes to stimulate and support innovation in teaching and learning. 

The Executive Director's specific duties include:

  • Providing strategic leadership for CTL and working closely with the Vice-Provost (Learning Initiatives) to transform teaching and learning at the University.
  • Furthering the effectiveness of CTL-sponsored programs that develop University instructors' abilities to employ exemplary teaching and assessment practices.
  • Identifying opportunities and challenges informed by research on the evolution of higher education, social trends, and emerging technologies.
  • Managing the CTL budget and planning resources to carry out the strategic initiatives of the Centre.
  • Forming and sustaining close partnerships with key stakeholder groups both on- and off-campus.
  • Leading and serving on University committees concerned with teaching, learning, and the effective use of instructional technologies.
  • Collaborating with University stakeholders to develop evaluation strategies and implement approaches appropriate for experiential learning, personalized learning and transformative learning.
  • Supporting the University’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation as expressed in Braiding Past, Present and Future with particular emphasis in the learning environment.
  • An unwavering commitment to implementing and maintaining Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity (EDI) initiatives.

Duties 

Strategic Planning

  • Plans and leads strategic planning activities that promote the CTL both within the University of Alberta and beyond.
  • Lead, design, and oversee the implementation and support of long-range plans for effective use of centralized and local resources that support the University's teaching and course delivery goals.
  • In collaboration with IST, Dean of Students, Online and Continuing Education Hub, College Offices of Education and other relevant stakeholders, actively consult and identify areas of interest for the creation of programming pilots and test plans to implement new and emerging educational technologies within a range of disciplines.
  • Develop and maintain networks and collaborative partnerships with other CTL colleagues nationally and internationally to stay aware of ongoing and emerging practices and approaches in the professional development of teaching in research intensive universities.

Coordination of Programming and Initiatives

  • Promote effective teaching at the University of Alberta
    • Facilitate and contribute expertise to University-wide discussions related to teaching and learning.
    • Remain current with and be able to speak to emerging literature on post-secondary teaching and learning.
  • Oversee professional development for instructors at the University of Alberta
    • Evaluate the need for diverse levels of professional development for instructors of different learning modalities.
    • Consult with academic units  to develop interdisciplinary and discipline-specific professional development programs, and identify higher level synergistic topics from which many would benefit (e.g., assessment of learning in large classes and in remote learning environments).
    • Consult with curricular and accreditation committees or processes when called upon for program level expertise.

Contribute to the field of teaching and learning in higher education

  • Identify research directions and promote awareness and understanding of emerging trends and new research in the field.
  • Participate in varying committee work and as an active member of teaching and learning working groups, as delegated by the Vice-Provost (Learning Initiatives).
  • Foster the scholarship of teaching and learning at the University of Alberta.

Qualifications

  • A PhD or EdD in education, teaching and learning in higher education, program evaluation, or other relevant field.
  • A record of successful leadership in educational development in post-secondary academia; publications in the field are considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated expertise of research-informed teaching and the use of technology to enhance learning.
  • Superior communications skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with multi-functional teams.
  • Executive-level project management and resource planning skills.
  • Proven track-record of collaboration to create a shared vision, engage in strategic thinking, planning, implementation, and action planning to achieve a cultural change within a complex organization.
  • Supervisory or mentorship experience in a unionized environment and ability to promote a positive work environment.
  • Program evaluation planning and execution skills.
  • University teaching experience combined with familiarity in developing online learning activities, resources and assessments.
  • Experience as an educational developer an asset.
