As a subject-matter expert, provides framework and supports Student Service’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. Reporting to the Executive Director, Student Services, the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Advisor provides expertise on the development, implementation and monitoring of Student Services EDI practices to promote a culture where students and staff feel represented, seen, heard and feel like they belong.
Grounded in understanding of a breadth of areas encompassed under the EDI umbrella, and in collaboration with the Executive Director, this highly-collaborative subject-matter expert will support the integration of a strong and action-oriented EDI direction that is embedded within, and threaded throughout, the larger Student Services Strategy / strategic direction.
In collaboration with the Executive Director, and as an expert in the field, facilitates the development, and oversees the management and execution of the Student Services EDI Action Plan (as framed by the McGill EDI Strategic Plan 2020-2025 as well as the Student Services Strategic Plan).
Provides guidance, support and expertise on EDI across Student Services, focusing on the needs of directors and managers. Promotes the integration of equity, diversity and inclusion-related considerations into all aspects of Student Services. Collaborates with leaders across Student Services to ensure that EDI practices are embedded into all employee lifecycle moments; positioned as the subject-matter expert on all EDI matters.
Researches, develops and presents policy and best practice recommendations for leadership review.
Responsible for supporting capacity-building, awareness-raising, benchmarking and proposing and monitoring accountability practices related to EDI across Student Services, particularly among leadership.
Creates connections with students from underrepresented groups with a view to ensuring that a range of student views and perspectives are heard, considered and integrated into Student Services
In alliance with the Strategy, Assessment and Evaluation office, ensures that data collection and analysis include equity, diversity and inclusion considerations in feedback processes (via focus groups, committees, surveys, etc.) and knowledge translation
Through these measures the EDI Advisor will work with those involved to ensure the development of the inclusive culture needed to support student needs and to achieve outcomes that are rigorous, relevant and accessible to diverse populations.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
Excellent communication and facilitation skills. Demonstrated leadership in EDI strategies. Subject-matter expert in EDI trends and data. Resource for all Student Services managers/staff in matters of EDI. High emotional intelligence with exceptional interpersonal skills. Experience with equality, diversity and inclusion legislation and policies, including firsthand knowledge of best practices with a proven track record of implementing successful initiatives. Experience in developing and delivering training. Demonstrated familiarity and/or experience with the McGill environment or other university environment, preferred. Professionalism with excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to build constructive and effective relationships internally and externally. Excellent time management skills and the ability organize and prioritize work when juggling multiple mandates and deadlines. Superior planning, organizational, problem solving and decision making skills. Excellent facilitation and presentation skills. Able to support individuals from diverse communities drawing upon personal lived experience, formal training and previous work experience. Lived experience with diverse communities is a strong asset. Strong computer skills, with a demonstrated ability to work in a PC environment using social media, presentation software, database, spreadsheets, web design, web applications. Clear and effective communication skills in English and French, written and spoken.
