Compensation Range
$6,068.92 - $8,724.25 CAD Monthly

Job Summary

The BCCDC is seeking an enthusiastic and highly qualified applicant for the full-time position of genomic epidemiologist to fill an exciting new position working on a public health monitoring program to (1) evaluate trends over time and space of genetic mutations from samples taken in clinical settings, (2) understand community-level disease transmission through integration of diagnostic to whole genome sequencing laboratory data, (3) assess the burden of severe diseases associated with specific genetic variants and identify those targets most likely to resist pharmaceutical interventions, (4) assess the long-term effect of respiratory diseases in the context of post-COVID-19 pandemic, including long COVID burden. The Research Epidemiologist is responsible for conducting research and epidemiology tasks on complementary COVID-19 projects including vaccine effectiveness.   

The ideal applicant will possess a curiosity and passion for science, a talent for independent and team-based research, and extensive knowledge and experience in both molecular laboratory methods relevant to medical microbiology and epidemic intelligence processes relevant to public health practitioners and policy makers.


Organizational Status
The incumbent will report directly to the Director, Data Science Innovation, at the BC Centre for Disease Control, who is also an Adjunct Professor at the UBC School of Population and Public Health. The incumbent will also communicate regularly with other Principal Investigators of the public health investigation and will interact and work closely with the research team, biostatisticians and provincial partners.
Work Performed

  • Design, develop, implement and oversee research protocols and analytical pipelines in consultation with Investigators.
  • Design and interpret epidemiological analyses.
  • Day-to-day coordination of research studies.
  • Develops materials (e.g. briefing notes) related to the research project.
  • Reviews and synthesizes literature relevant to the research project.
  • Liaises with project collaborators and partners.
  • Develops related research reports and manuscripts for publications and presentations at meetings and conferences.
  • Performs other related duties.


Consequence of Error/Judgement
Inappropriate judgement exercised by the incumbent will result in the involvement of the Principal Investigators and Manager to evaluate the issue in question and work together to develop future strategies. Errors in performance could lead to budget over expenditures, loss of funding from granting agencies which could have a significant impact on the effectiveness, image and reputation of the project, investigators, and organization.
Supervision Received
Works independently under the general direction of the Director of Data Science Innovation, Principal Investigators and Manager in accordance with established objectives. Supervision will be in the form of progress reports and meetings as needed with the Principal Investigators and Manager.
Supervision Given
This position does not typically supervise others but will liaise with data analysts, investigators, senior scientists, surveillance analysts, biostatisticians, collaborators, partners, and research and administrative staff.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preference for MSc or PhD in epidemiology, statistics, health services, or public health.
  • Experience in literature reviews is required. 
  • Experience with research, statistical analyses including surveys is required. 
  • Proficiency in R is required. 
  • Experience in infectious diseases epidemiology, or use of environmental laboratory data is an asset. 
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently with a high degree of accuracy. Excellent writing skills. 
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills. 
  • Superior organizational skills to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner and flexibility to adapt to changing workload. 
  • Professional and self-motivated; strong interpersonal skills. 
  • Good time management skills.
  • Experience with project management is an asset.
