Position Summary:
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, conducts laboratory safety inspections and occupational hygiene measurements in various areas. Assesses workplace hazards. Investigates complaints. Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Maintains hazardous material licenses. Maintains inventories, database and equipment. Prepares reports. Compiles data.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct laboratory safety inspections (general, radiation and biohazard) and occupational hygiene measurements (indoor air quality, air sampling for contaminants, etc.) in various areas.
  • Performs surveys of laboratories where open sources of radioisotopes are used. Assesses radioactive surface contamination through analysis of samples obtained by the wipe test technique.
  • Tests for leakage on sealed sources of radioisotopes by using radiation survey meters.
  • Performs bioassays (i.e. thyroid monitoring) for all individuals exposed to certain radio chemicals.
  • Calibrates radiation and occupational hygiene equipment.
  • Maintains and updates radioisotopes licenses, biohazard certificates and other records using a computerized database.
  • Acts as a resources person, resolves problems and instructs others. Provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques, and the analysis of results.
  • Compiles data. Prepares reports. Analyzes and discusses results and their interpretation with others. Maintains records and files.
  • Maintains equipment and performs repairs. Arranges for servicing.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment (radioactive instruments, biological safety cabinets, autoclave, etc.) Recommends and purchases equipment and material.
  • Keeps abreast of new developments in the field to update skills and knowledge.
  • Uses a personal computer, radiation survey equipment and occupational hygiene equipment.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

Ability to conduct sampling and inspection in various areas. Able to perform routine physical work including walking and lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying weights up to approximately 50 lbs. Demonstrated ability to work in a PC environment using word-processing, spreadsheets and databases. English & French, spoken and written. College (CEGEP) training in civil engineering technology, architectural technology or construction management. Completion of the CNESST-ASP construction health and safety course is an asset. Experience in the field of construction and renovation. Ability to conduct sampling and inspection in various areas. Ability to perform routine physical work including walking and lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying heavy weights up to approximately 50 lbs.


Minimum Education and Experience:


DEC III - Occupational Health and Safety 1 Year Related Experience / DEC III - Environmental Sciences


Hourly Salary:


(MUNACA Level 08) $21.71 - $29.93
