Description:

Reporting to the Chief Operating Engineer or Assistant Chief Engineer, the Engineer A (2nd Class Operating Engineer) is responsible for the operation of the Central Steam Plant, district heating system, co-generation, heat recovery installation and other campus equipment governed by TSSA regulations. The Engineer A is also responsible for leading and assigning work to maintenance engineers and acts as Lead Hand assigning work to shift engineers during shift operation hours on afternoon, night and weekend shifts.

Typical Duties:


The following illustrative tasks indicate the level of skill required and the extent of responsibility involved in this job;they in no way limit the incumbent to the tasks indicated:

  • Regular rounds to check mechanical equipment and perform needed mechanical service such as: checking equipment temperatures and pressures, conducting water chemical treatment tests, changing filters, regenerating softeners and reverse osmosis water equipment, etc.;
  • Provides running maintenance and minor repairs (e.g. including packing of glands; changing of belts;stripdown and minor repairs to equipment, including valves, steam traps, pressure reducing stations, controlvalves and other similar equipment);
  • Provides accurate details of routine monthly surveys and meter readings of equipment and facilities;
  • Carries out the required inspection and preventive maintenance of all equipment, as per preventive maintenance folder printout and follow up;
  • Obtains assistance from outside contractors and other engineers as the situation dictates during off-hours and weekends, assisting outside contractors when work is performed during shift;
  • Maintains daily log sheets on operating equipment, records important breakdowns, malfunctions and events(e.g. lack of heat) that occur during the shift and communicates with relief shift engineer on event issues;
  • Maintains adequate inventory of chemicals and spare parts; and
  • Co-ordinates and/or assists outside contractors and University of Toronto Trades Services when work is performed during shift and delegates responsibilities to fellow Engineer B’s as required

Education: High School graduate or equivalent combination of education and experience plus a Second (2nd) Class Operating Engineer Certification valid in the Province of Ontario.

Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of experience as an operating engineer. Must have a good working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment, including refrigeration, heating(e.g.boilers) and air handling systems, and ability to comprehend and apply environmental control principles. Must have: basic electrical knowledge and trouble-shooting skills, basic proficiency in standard office computer applications (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Windows OS) and familiarity with computerized Building Automation Systems or other computerized control systems.

Other: Must have: good diagnostic and record keeping skills, proven leadership skills, the ability to lead and train,the ability to communicate eff ectively (both orally and written), strong customer service skills and the ability to work collaboratively with others. Building Environmental Systems Certificate an asset.

Work Schedule:  Must be available for day, afternoon and night shifts (including weekends and statutory holidays). Rotating 8-hour shifts, 40hrs/week
