Working for Trades, Infrastructure and Maintenance 

The Trades, Infrastructure & Maintenance team includes staff who are responsible for the careful practice of construction, repairs, and scheduled maintenance of campus facilities. Trades staff are an essential contributor to the safe and efficient functioning of the university.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Construction Superintendent, the Elevating Device Specialist will have a vast knowledge of the elevating device industry so as to effectively manage the university’s Elevating Device Maintenance Services Program. As the primary contact for the program, they are responsible for the administration and coordination of all work related to the maintenance and renewal of all elevating device assets on our Edmonton campuses. The role requires a high degree of relationship building / managing skills, organizational skills, and coordination skills.

This position requires a strong skill set in trade knowledge that encompasses these six elements: Safety, Adaptability, Planning & Organizing, Teamwork & Leadership, Continuous Improvement and Enterprise Software.

Duties

  • Coordinate contractor orientation for access to campus-wide equipment, participate in weekly maintenance contractor-led meetings and manage the service contract and obligations with AEDARSA
  • Collaborate and consult regularly with various parties including units within the Facilities & Operations department and third party contractors for the effective management of work
  • Accountability for the management of the university’s elevating device parts inventory
  • Manage capital renewal funding sources for elevating devices and approve maintenance program payments
  • Manage and inform stakeholders regarding elevating device service interruption in an expedient manner and senior leadership regarding major incidents, issues, and extended periods of elevating device service.
  • Analyze and discuss performance of service key performance indicators and metrics with the ultimate goal of reducing elevating device service interruption downtime
  • Review and investigate entrapments
  • Coordinate and participate in fire alarm verifications
  • Monitor on-site work periodically and be available for after-hours callback requests
  • Schedule AEDARSA inspection and work with AEDARSA to provide them with campus-wide inspection access
  • Develop and communicate elevating device shutdown procedures for all elevating device maintenance and renewals
  • Collaborate on procurement initiation, contract negotiation and renewal, and material acquisition
  • Collaborate on the establishment of quality assurance principles, policies and procedures as they pertain to contractual obligations of contracted Elevating Device Maintenance Service Program service providers and elevator consultants
  • Assist with the development and continual maintenance of the 10-year Master Modernization Plan for elevating device renewals

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum High School diploma
  • Minimum of 2-5 years of relevant industry experience working with elevating device systems is required
  • Demonstrated understanding of the elevating device industry and appropriate codes is required
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license is required
  • Ability to read technical drawings/specifications and operation requirements is required
  • Understanding of Building and Operating codes and standards is required
  • Possessing an understanding of quality control is required
  • Project management experience is required
  • Organizational abilities to effectively prioritize tasks on multiple projects is required
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills is required
  • Ability to work in a team environment is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Property management experience (5-10 years) is an asset
  • Construction experience is an asset
  • Computer and networking proficiency is an asset
  • Will consider other Journeypersons with industry-related experience in overseeing elevating device maintenance contracts
