Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Supervisor of Educational Technology, the Education Development Coordinator is responsible for planning, advising and consulting with faculty members, contract instructors and teaching assistants on the use of a large and evolving number of educational technologies in teaching and learning activities at Carleton. The position will be responsible for migrating courses from one learning management system to another.

The incumbent will also evaluate and look critically at new technologies, teaching practices, and research to ensure that TLS is providing the best possible teaching and learning tools and approaches to faculty members and students in a way that is informed by educational research and established best practices in the fields of instructional design and educational technology.

The Education Development Coordinator will plan, develop and facilitate one-on-one training and group workshops, as well as design and deliver online tutorials (synchronous and asynchronous) relating to the use of any form of technology used to enhance teaching and learning. The Education Development Coordinator is responsible for efficiently managing multiple projects related to educational technology at Carleton. These can include new initiatives, instructor projects or continuing management of long-term projects.

This position uses instructional design strategies and learning theories to design e-learning activities using the Learning Management System (LMS) and a large variety of tools. This is an important position within the Teaching and Learning Services as it is responsible for implementing, supporting, and administrating course websites within Carleton’s Learning Management System (LMS) and other Digital Learning tools.


Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
Knowledge and expertise in the following areas:
Design and Development
• Select, modify or create an EdTech enhanced learning experience appropriate for the instructional and learning outcomes
• Structure content based on educational research, instructional design practices and instructor input
• Establish an appropriate learning environment using learner-centered educational technologies or other web applications
• Develop, select, modify or create EdTech support materials

Implementation and Coordination
• Plan and organize projects (project management)
• Conduct needs analysis to help determine requirements
• Promote and initiate collaboration (i.e. CCS, library, instructors, HR, EHS, and SASC)
• Evaluate initiatives (select instruments, methodology, collect and analyze data)

Communication/Training
• Consult with instructors and learners
• Excellent verbal and written communication
• Initiate collaboration (i.e. ITS, library, instructors, HR, EHS, and SASC)
• Develop documentation and end-user training materials
• Evaluate and report on activities relating to communication initiatives

Computing/Web Application skills
o ePortfolio Systems (Mahara), Learning Management Systems (Brightspace), Content Management Systems (WordPress), Media Management Systems (Kaltura) Student Response Systems (Poll Everywhere),
o Office suite of tools, Articulate, Camtasia, H5P, Microsoft Teams
o Basic image editing and graphic design skills
o Basic video/audio editing

Customer-facing skills
o Experience in working in a university environment, across multiple departments and faculties
o Experience delivering training sessions
o Development of documentation, and end-user training materials
o High professional, service and solution oriented

The incumbent must have effective organizational skills and excellent communication skills (both written and verbal). Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills, as well as good judgment, initiative, resourcefulness, tact and discretion are essential. Moreover, the incumbent must possess the ability to work under pressure and to remain focused.

Adaptability and attention to detail will be the key to this position, as well as the ability to work in a team environment.


Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
• Master’s Degree in Educational Technology or a related field is required.
• Minimum of four (4) years of related experience, especially with modern learning management systems, educational technologies and sophisticated web applications.
