Faculty of Science, Redpath Museum

Join the prestigious Redpath Museum as the Educational Program Manager and advance the University’s academic mission by promoting lifelong learning and public engagement in the rich cultural and scientific heritage of the Redpath Museum.

Reporting to the Director of Redpath Museum, the Educational Program Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Redpath Museum Learning Services and Public Program (LSaPP). Responsibilities include the development, implementation and updating of procedures, strategies, and policies for the proper functioning of the LSaPP. This role plays an integral part in furthering the University’s academic mission by leading a team of museum educators and guides whose mission is to educate and raise public awareness on a variety of subjects related to the Redpath Museum’s collections. 

Primary Responsibilities:

Management and Administration

  • Provides an efficient and effective administration of the resources of the LSaPP.

  • Develops and implements a comprehensive plan for museum education and public programs, aligning them with the Redpath Museum's goals and objectives.

  • Establishes annual objectives, annual program, budget, and resources for the LSaPP.

  • Supervises support staff. Performs several HR functions, including workload allocation, performance management, conflict resolution and departmental organizational structure.

  • Communicates and engages with internal and external stakeholders such as the Redpath Museum team, other McGill entities and museum communities on a variety of projects including exhibitions, publication, and outreach. 

  • Develops collaborations and partnerships with individuals, organizations, and schools.

  • Conducts surveys to analyze visitor demographics, including age groups, geographic origins, and awareness of the museum. Utilize findings to develop targeted outreach plans to engage underrepresented groups such as teenagers and francization groups, fostering broader community involvement and enriching visitor experiences.

  • Participates in special events such as vernissage, and various meetings held at the Museum.  

Education

  • Oversees and approves all educational activities of the department. Develops educational programs and activities for the Museum.

  • Ensures conformity with the Programme de formation de l’école québécoise du ministère de l’Éducation du Québec.   Ensures that program is adapted for audiences in specific age groups.  

  • Aligns educational offerings with the organization's vision by implementing best practices to enrich visitor experiences and ensures high-quality educational programs.

  • Represents the Redpath Museum locally, within Canada and internationally.

  • Develops and maintains appropriate liaison functions and communications within the community and beyond to further promote the Redpath Museum educational offer and public services.

Exhibitions

  • Participates in the development and implementation of the exhibitions.

Research and Publication

  • Collaborates with researchers and seeks opportunities to publish in educational and museum journals related to museum education.

Other Qualifying skills and /or abilities: 

  • Undergraduate degree, preferably in a related field such as Humanities and Social Sciences or Science. Master’s degree in museum studies is considered an asset.

  • Proven experience in educational program management, in a museum or similar cultural institution.

  • Experience in developing and implementing educational programs and public outreach initiatives.

  • Engaging and inspiring leader with demonstrated abilities to manage and lead a team.

  • Strong administrative and organizational skills, including resource management, budgeting, and policy development.

  • Proven success in facilitating and maintaining strong, consistent, and positive communications to a diverse audience.

  • Excellent research and analytical skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work both independently and in multidisciplinary teams.

  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to think out-of-the-box solutions.

  • Strong project management and grants application skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative with a high degree of flexibility in managing multiple assignments with tight deadlines. 

  • Proficiency with software such as Microsoft 365 and social media management.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both French and English. McGill University is an English-language university where day-to-day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 4 on a scale of 0-4.
