About The Position

The Wildfire & Carbon project, funded by the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions, is partnering with Parks Canada to hire an Ecological Modeler for a 2 year position with benefits. The selected candidate will work closely with individuals at Parks Canada, Gregg Walker and Tara Sharma, and the Canadian Forest Service, and join a multidisciplinary team led by Werner Kurz, with co-investigators Lori Daniels, Paul Hessburg, Dominik Roeser, and Carolyn Smyth.

The selected candidate will contribute to a multi-institution project investigating mitigation and adaptation strategies to minimize wildfire emissions, create bioeconomic opportunities and maximize forest carbon sinks.  Additionally the project seeks to identify and enhance synergies between wildfire risk reduction activities and those that strengthen British Columbia’s forest-based bio-economy. The primary responsibilities for the position are 1) gathering and synthesizing existing data from Canada’s National Park System, 2) modeling a range of management actions within CFS’ spatially-explicit Generic Carbon Budget Model (GCBM) and 3) implementing existing or developing new landscape-scale fire spread models. Specifically, this researcher will initially focus on carbon and fire dynamics within Jasper, Kootenay, and Wood Buffalo National Parks but will also participate in BC-wide analyses.

Candidates with experience in fire risk and fire behaviour modelling, ecological modeling, nature-based climate solutions and big (spatial) data problems are encouraged to apply. The position offers a flexible work location with teleworking options. Due to COVID-19, work will begin remotely. After September 2021, the position will be based at UBC in Lori Daniel’s lab.


Expected Responsibilities
  • Create and refine disturbance matrices to represent risk reduction treatments, like mechanical thinning, prescribed burns, and managed wildfire, within the spatially-explicit generic carbon budget model of the Canadian Forest Service.
  • Integrate existing data sets into ecological models to evaluate relationship between wildfire, treated areas and fire severity
  • Develop or implement existing landscape-scale fire spread models by integrating vegetation and disturbance modeling, univariate and multivariate statistical methods, and advanced geospatial methods.
  • Utilize Parks Canada’s existing stakeholder networks to mobilize knowledge
  • Write and publish peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts
  • Manage data analysis, metadata documentation, and data distribution
  • Participate in project meetings and relevant workshops

Qualifications
  • REQUIRED:
    • PhD in forest ecology, fire ecology, forest management, or related disciplines with proficiency in ecological modeling
    • Expertise with R and Python programming languages
    • Experience in stand/landscape level fire risk and fire behavior modelling
    • Understanding of wildfire ecology in western North America
    • Expertise in the use of Geographic Information System software such as ArcGIS or QGIS
  • DESIRED:
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are essential
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team setting
    • Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain valid driver’s license from BC
    • Understanding of key landscape ecology concepts and demonstrated expertise with statistical modeling techniques is required
