Compensation Range

Reporting to the Head of the Division of Dermatology at BC Women’s Hospital and to the Principal Investigators of specific research studies and projects, the Research Manager is responsible for the overall management and direction of the research project, program and clinical study area. The Research Manager plans, coordinates, and manages research projects within the context of a research culture and in accordance with the policies, procedures, mission, vision and values of Children’s and Women’s Health Center of BC (C&W) and the University of British Columbia (UBC). 

Job Description Summary

To manage research and activities and program implementation for the Division of Dermatology and the newly created Eczema Care and Research Initiative.

Major responsibilities include:

  • Advising PI’s in conducting research studies related, but not limited to: clinical trial approval process, study design, budget set up, reviewing protocols, impact of research projects on program resource utilization, standard operational procedure development, development and updating of resource manuals for research practices, and policies and procedures, within the Division of Dermatology and Eczema Care and Research Initiative.

  • Liaising with both internal and external research collaborators to coordinate research related activities

Organizational Status

The Eczema Care and Research Initiative is a new program within the Division of Dermatology.   The Research Manager has a leadership role in the development and implementation of this new program. 

Position to whom this person reports:  Head, Division of Dermatology – Wingfield Rehmus, MD MPH for overall function.  Specific investigators including Dr. Stuart Turvey, Dr. Sunil Kalia, Dr. Allison Gregory, and others for specific research studies.

Positions with whom this person works:  All division members including physicians, allied health professionals, computer programming specialists, statisticians, clinical trials nurse, medical students working on specific projects and divisional clerical staff.

Contacts (internal and external to the University): Institutional Review Board (UBC) and Hospital Research Review Committee (C&W), finance offices at UBC, BCCHRI, CRSU, and PHSA, other individuals who are working in equivalent research positions either in the institution or in other institutions who are research collaborators, patients and parents of patients involved in research studies. Will build relationships with patient organizations such as the Eczema Society of Canada as well as research organizations such as PeDRA (Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance).
Shared office space in the Division of Dermatology, BC Children s Hospital. Desktop computer and telephone access available. Flexibility in work hours may be required.

Work Performed

  • In collaboration with individual investigators, develops and manages research project timelines, ensures projects are implemented and delivered within specified timelines and work plans; monitor workflow and report on progress; develop, coordinate and implement/oversee data collection protocols.

  • Develops grant applications to support Divisional research projects. This includes formal literature reviews, identifying sources of grant funding, communicating with Division members, and finalizing grant applications.

  • Advises PI’s in the conduction of research studies. This includes, but is not limited to, clinical trial approval process, study design, impact of research projects on program resource utilization, standard operational procedure development.

  • Draft ethics review applications (REB form, develop consent forms, recruitment letters, and other recruitment tools required for the study).

  • Review protocols and agreements for ethical integrity, accuracy and feasibility to meet scientific and ethical integrity standards.

  • Ensure that all other regulatory requirements at all institutional levels are met and maintained.

  • Oversees data collection and handling of subject records.

  • Draft annual renewals, amendments, request of acknowledgments and study completions throughout the life of the studies.

  • Performs data analysis and drafts of abstracts and manuscripts for publication.

  • Liaise with both internal and external research collaborators to coordinate research activities.

  • Onboard and aid in supervising new medical students, residents, and research assistants who are collaborating on dermatology research projects.

  • Develops resource manuals for research practices, policies and procedures within the Division of Dermatology.

  • Leads research review meetings for the Division on a quarterly basis or more frequently as needed.

  • Drafts documentation of Divisional research activity.

  • Maintains accurate and up to date financial records for all research activities in the Division

  • Manage research supplies

Additional tasks include:

  • Oversees the operation of clinical databases. Ensures appropriate development, execution and supervision of plans, policies, and practices that control, protect, deliver and enhance the value of data and information assets.

  • Collaborates in the recruitment of research staff. Responsible for training, supervising, managing, coaching and mentoring, and formal performance reviews. Directs the disciplinary process up to and including termination of employment.

  • Establishes clear definitions of responsibility and education needs for members of the research team. Ensure all job descriptions within the area of responsibility clarify and delineate position expectations.

  • Perform related duties as required.


Consequence of Error/Judgement
 

Accuracy, timeliness, and sound judgment are required to maximize effectiveness of the research program and team. The individual will need to exercise independent judgment, and feel comfortable working with a large and diverse team including physicians, nurses, allied health personnel, trainees, and administrative assistants.
Errors in judgment could decrease the productivity of the Divisional research program, and might adversely affect the reputation of the Division, Neonatal Program and the credibility of the research. Errors in judgment may also adversely the safe conduct of research within the Neonatal Program.
Supervision received
The individual reports to Wingfield Rehmus, MD MPH,  Head of the Division of Dermatology at BC Womens Hospital/UBC, and to the individual investigators within the Division for specific projects.
Supervision Given

The individual supervises research coordinators/assistants and students relating to Divisional research activities, and the activities research nurse or other allied health staff involved in individual research projects.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a health-related discipline, plus a minimum of 3 years of experience in an academic health care setting or a related industry, including relevant leadership and supervisory experience.

  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s or PhD degree in a health-related discipline preferred, with research experience. 

  • A demonstrated understanding of clinical issues, knowledge of scientific terminology and research methodology in the health sector.

  • Experience with research practices and clinical trials administration.

  • Ability to provide guidance on the interpretation and application of clinical trial agreement policies and procedures.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels.

  • Strong analytical skills, is a problem solver who works with integrity, adaptability and originality.

  • Interpersonal skills for the implementation of clinical trials and multi-centered research projects, working well with patients, clinicians, collaborators, regulators, and industry representatives.

  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate a variety of activities to ensure maximum effectiveness.

  • Ability to work independently and to work on multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Advanced level of computer proficiency and database literacy.
