Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Head of Library Technology Services(LTS) and under the direction of the Discovery Systems Librarian, the incumbent contributes to the ongoing operation and support of the Library Services Platform (LSP).

In this role, the incumbent troubleshoots, maintains, and updates the LSP to provide reliable and efficient access to the Library’s collections and resources. The Discovery Systems Technician also works in concert with LTS Systems Analysts to support additional departmental software and platforms. They work in close collaboration with colleagues across all Library departments, campus partners, OCUL members, and software vendors to coordinate and develop an ever-evolving system, meeting the needs of both the Library and its end users.


Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
• Excellent oral and written communication, with the ability to succinctly express and document complex information;
• Familiarity with digital library metadata standards and protocols is desired;
• Excellent interpersonal skills;
• Ability to understand and apply standards;
• Experience in, or willingness to work in, a busy and complex service-oriented environment;
• Practical experience contributing to development and delivery of training and supporting materials, including web-based documentation is desired;
• Proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment;
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to take on a varied workload and competing and changing priorities;
• Self-motivated, working on their own initiative to identify and resolve issues while maintaining clear communications;
• A thorough, analytical approach to problem-solving;
• Spirit of autonomy to work independently and effectively with technology in a fast-paced environment;
• Interpretation and breakdown of client questions to achieve positive, supportable resolutions over the long-term;
• Sound judgement to seek further information and escalate requests and issues accordingly;
• Ability to attain and build on knowledge and awareness in emerging technology trends and initiatives to further develop proficiency in these areas.


Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
• Completion of a Bachelor’s degree and a two year Library Technician diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Three years relevant experience, preferably in a Library setting working in a multitude of Library Service Platform modules (i.e. Cataloguing, Serials management, Electronic resources management, Acquisitions, Circulation, and/or Assessment).
• Familiarity and practical experience in working with Library metadata standards and system protocols such as: MARC21, Z39.50, and XML.
