Disability Management Advisor

Position Summary: 

Under the general supervision of the Manager, Disability Management and Benefits, the incumbent will be responsible for managing disability and work accident cases in various areas of the university. Through the application of best practices in disability and work accident management, the incumbent will manage claims with a focus on early return to work resulting in reducing the length of the absence, and disability costs. Acts as an advisor to the University community with respect to the application and interpretation of policies, procedures and best practices governing disability plans and industrial accidents.

Primary Responsibilities: 

Disability Management

  • Responsible for managing and monitoring short-term and long-term disability claims;
  • Performs early assessment of each short-term disability case in order to ensure early intervention takes place;
  • Monitors absences closely; ensures that leaves are supported by the appropriate medical documentation; determines appropriate courses of action on a case-by-case basis;
  • Develops strategies to promote early return to work, supporting the employee and the supervisor in order to facilitate the return to work and reduce the length of the disability when possible;
  • Prepares written documentation such as expertise mandates, letters to employees, questionnaires to treating physician, etc;
  • Analyses and develops strategies to address specific issues; collaborates with Employee Relations, employment area, legal counsel, etc., as required;
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with external stakeholders, such as physicians, insurer, and rehabilitation specialists;
  • Monitors and assesses long-term disability cases, working in close collaboration with the insurer.

Work accidents management

  • Responsible for the management of  work accident cases submitted to the CNESST;
  • Reviews accident reports with immediate supervisor and performs investigation when necessary;
  • Prepares written documentation throughout the management of the claim, such as information regarding the admissibility of claims to CNESST, expertise mandates, BEM requests, letters to employees, letters to treating physician, letters of appeal, etc;
  • Acts as the contact person with the employee, the immediate supervisor, the HR Advisor, and the CNESST agent in the management of claims;
  • Promotes early return to work by developing plans for temporary work assignment and rehabilitation which will be submitted to the treating physician for approval;
  • Participate in the conciliation and/or hearing processes with lawyers and conciliators from the Tribunal Administratif du Travail;
  • Validates the costs of work accidents by performing an analysis of CNESST monthly reports.

Training

  • Responsible for ongoing education, training and support to HR Advisors, supervisors, and employees regarding best practices and initiatives of disability and work accident management.

Statistics

  • Develops and maintains statistics on short-term and long-term disabilities, as well as work accidents cases;
  • Analyzes and prepares reports, as required.

Minimum Education & Experience: 

  • Undergraduate degree
  • Three (3) years' related experience
  • Written and spoken French and English

Other Qualifying Skills And/Or Abilities: 

  • Thorough knowledge of the best practices in disability management.
  • Knowledge of the Act respecting industrial accidents and occupational diseases.
  • Proven ability to analyze disability and CNESST files and make independent decisions based on facts and issues.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop creative solutions to complex problems.
  • Ability to persuade and influence in adverse situations.
  • Good communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work in a computerized environment.
  • Diploma in Disability Management or Health & Safety is an asset.
  • Member of l’Ordre des conseillers en ressources humaines agréés is an asset.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Bachelor's Degree 3 Years Related Experience /

Annual Salary:

(MPEX Grade 05) $64,210.00 - $96,310.00
