Position Summary:
Reporting to the Chief Investment Officer (CIO) & Treasurer, the Director, Investments will oversee the management of the McGill University Pension Plan and McGill Endowment fund making recommendations on tactical and strategic asset allocation, rebalancing of investments, investment managers’ searches as well as monitoring of managers & funds.
Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work in collaboration with the other Director, Investments to properly allocate time for the selection of new funds and in the monitoring of current managers that manage the assets of the McGill University Pension Plan and McGill Endowment fund.
  • Lead in the selection, evaluation and monitoring of current and prospective investment funds. Make recommendations as required to the CIO & Investment Committees; Travel as required to conduct due diligence.
  • Lead research and proactively generate investment ideas including new asset classes & investment strategies.
  • Provide recommendations on tactical or strategic asset mix changes or repositioning.
  • Evaluate and improve sustainable investment programs including enhancing current fund monitoring practices, manager search procedures, new sustainable investments, evaluation of the impact of new sustainable initiatives (including to risk and return) and executing on current objectives such as engaging with current managers, decarbonization and increasing Impact Investments.
  • Lead the negotiation of legal contracts with investment managers and legal counsel.
  • Lead & oversees on-boarding of new relationships, on-going monitoring and termination of investment mandates.
  • Oversee implementation and transition of managers and assets.
  • Prepare and present investment recommendations to Investment Committees.
  • Budget and monitor the risk of the Pension Plan and of the Endowment fund; develop techniques to measure the funds risk and return contributions and maximize performance by allocating assets between asset classes and managers. Provide risk adjustment recommendation to the CIO.
  • Maintain and build knowledge and understanding of complex investment related matters, including investment industry trends, changes in the investment environment as well as trends related to sustainable investments.


Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

CFA, Master in finance or equivalent. Strong demonstrated knowledge of markets, investments and pension plans (i.e. tactical and strategic asset allocation, rebalancing of investments, etc.). Ability to communicate effectively and work effectively and efficiently under tight deadlines. Proven ability to supervise employees. Proven experience working and negotiating with investment managers as well as managing these relationships to ensure that pension plan and endowment fund investment objectives are met. Demonstrated ability to undertake in-depth analysis of highly complex issues and assess their impact. Interest and ability to work in an entrepreneurial and proactive work culture. Demonstrated ability to work in a computerized environment including strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint, consultant database tools and Bloomberg. Ease of learning new systems. Heightened accuracy, attention to detail and organizational skills. English and French, spoken, written and read.
