POSITION SUMMARY : Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Finance and Corporate Services, the Director Commercial Services is responsible for achieving non-academic revenues to NAIT, the management, policies, operation and integration of NAIT’s business services.  Create a team to deliver world class service levels in a highly visible environment.  Working with third party vendors to create a seamless service to students, staff and visitors to NAIT. 

Responsibility for the oversight financial positions and operations to ensure that their mandate is met and that they generate a positive cash flow annually.

Responsibilities for revenue generating Commercial service operations and contracts include: Bookstore, Campus Parking Services, Food Services, Catering, Conference and Events, Snack Vending, Cold Beverage Services

Student One Card, Print Systems.


OBJECTIVES : The primary objective of the Director, Commercial Services is to provide oversight and direction for the effective and efficient operation of Commercial Services, in meeting the needs of the NAIT community.

The strategic objectives for the Director, Commercial Services are to integrate and expand business service operations and profit, and to measure and ensure contract performance and customer satisfaction.


NATURE AND SCOPE : The Director, Commercial Services is responsible for developing and leading an integrated management team along with the responsibility of overseeing, and potentially expanding, a variety of Commercial service contracts and/or services, with direct authority and accountability for contractor’s performance and responsiveness to customer service demands.

The Director is responsible for ensuring that the appropriate policies, procedures and controls are in place for all aspects of Commercial operations and ensure that Commercial Services end the fiscal year in a surplus position.

The Director, Commercial Services is responsible for developing consultative processes that support, effective relations with faculty and staff and to provide timely information and access to Commercial service providers.


SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES :

  • Is the authorized NAIT representative in transactions with contractors delivering Commercial services and is responsible to establish a contract, management, and accountability framework for these services.
  • Responsible for direction, monitoring, and evaluation of Bookstore operations and to ensure that the area is meeting the NAIT community needs. Work closely with Bookstore management to ensure ongoing financial health of Bookstores,
  • Responsibilities for direction, monitoring and evaluation of the Print Services and Campus Copy Centre operations and to ensure that it is meeting the NAIT community needs. Work closely with Print Shop management and to oversee and lead the change from a NAIT supported operation to a Commercial based operation.
  • Investigate and determine new opportunities for revenue generating Commercial service activities at the NAIT.
  • Develop, negotiate and implement Commercial service contracts for existing and new services, including operating conditions and hours, facilities and equipment upgrades, and product and franchise agreements.
  • Develop communication plans to provide the NAIT community with information related to the Commercial services.
  • Responsible to monitor and evaluate Commercial service activities by developing and managing a variety of feedback processes to ensure customer needs, expectations and satisfaction levels are being met, including contract compliancy inspections, student and employee feedback and survey processes.
  • Membership representation in international and Canadian associations within government, industry and NAIT groups in seeking best practices and opportunities for Commercial services.
  • Participate in NAIT campus and capital expansion programs as part of the project management team for major capital projects that relate to Commercial Service operations.
  • Participate in province-wide Commercial service opportunities developed through shared service arrangements and represent the NAIT in those discussions and opportunities.
  • Responsible for the hiring, orientation, evaluation, development, promotion and discipline of Commercial service excluded management and supervisory staff according to established NAIT policies, and Human Resources guidelines.
  • Develop and administer effective processes and procedures for the department budget, authorization of expenditures and the maintenance of records.
  • Participate in the establishment, interpretation and administration of NAIT and department policies.
  • Assume additional responsibilities and duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • A minimum of 10 years broad experience in Commercial service operations, contractor relationships, retail and hospitality operations along with   7 years’ experience in management of staff.
  • Broad experience in managing diverse business operations for the purposes of revenue generation and operational efficiency.
  • Experience with multi-unit housing and accommodation.
  • Experience in post-secondary sector would be beneficial.
  • Experience working with integrated financial information systems.
  • Experience in overseeing Bookstore and Print Centre operations.
  • Experience in marketing and contract management for large service contracts (e.g. food service, parking and transit providers).
  • Experience in analyzing and negotiating new business opportunities for the NAIT and bringing them on board as revenue generating centres.
  • Team and service excellence oriented and interfaces well with academics, professionals, senior management, corporate executives, and local officials. Excellent verbal, written, presentation and business skills.
  • Experience in providing a high level of customer service.


Remuneration: Salary will be commensurate with education and experience and will include a comprehensive benefit package.
