The Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism at Carleton University invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the School of Architecture and Urbanism (normally a five-year term, renewable) which includes a tenured appointment in the professorial ranks.

The successful candidate will have exceptional leadership abilities with a proven track record of consensus building, facilitating collective faculty vision and governance within the communal and administrative structure of the University. They must have a collegial, equitable, transparent, caring approach and exhibit administrative, and pedagogical excellence and an active creative practice/research portfolio.

About the Academic Unit

The Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism is globally recognized as a leader in the intersecting fields of architecture, conservation, sustainable design and urbanism. ASAU has a pre-professional Bachelor of Architectural Studies program that offers three majors: Conservation & Sustainability, Design, and Urbanism. At the graduate level the School has a two-year, and three-year CACB accredited, professional Masters of Architecture program, a Graduate Diploma in Architectural Conservation, a post-professional Masters and a PhD program.

Occupying traditional, unceded Algonquin territory, the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism brings together a vibrant student community of diverse backgrounds. The School prides itself on its commitment to studio culture and innovative research driven by twenty-five full-time faculty, complemented by many adjunct professors and contract instructors. Six administrators and five technical staff  support the operation of the School and its 350 undergraduate and 140 graduate students. All full-time faculty members engage in research and/or creative practice. The School’s research labs are described here: . Additional assets include a full woodshop and assembly room, metal and digital fabrication capabilities, state of the art print facilities, an endowed lecture series, a gallery and a public venue for reviews and events.

ASAU operates programs abroad for undergraduate and graduate students that integrate with studio teaching and offers faculty and students outstanding research and study opportunities.

The School is housed in a purpose-built Architecture Building. Designed in 1970, the building is historically significant, but in need of restoration and possible expansion. A building renewal campaign is underway.  Following our recent 50th anniversary, ASAU reinforced our strong and expanding alumni network. We have further affirmed the values and priorities of the School including a commitment to anti-racist and decolonial practices. The School is looking for thoughtful leadership that can facilitate these values and priorities, strengthen existing academic programs, build upon the School’s community in Ottawa and beyond, and support the development and implementation of new graduate programs.

The position requires demonstrable abilities at a senior administrative level within a school of architecture (or closely related unit) and familiarity with the Canadian academic context. A professional degree in architecture (M.Arch or equivalent) is required. Professional registration and/or a PhD is highly desired.

The director is the chief administrative and financial manager of the Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism (ASAU). ASAU is a school within the Faculty of Engineering and Design at Carleton University. The ASAU directorship is positioned between faculty, ASAU Faculty Board and the Office of the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design, with a seat on the Senate – the University’s most senior academic body. The director is supported by two associate directors and various program chairs in a collaborative model of governance. The position comes with opportunities for teaching and graduate supervision.
