Position Summary:
Reporting to the Chef Dining Hall, the Dining Hall Supervisor will supervise the daily shift operations and strive to improve service operations in the Dining Hall, ensuring that guest services, operational needs and financial objectives are met. Ensure safety of food handling and sanitation standards. Provide commercial and quality service operations in an environment that fosters a sense of community, enhances student learning and supports the overall mission of the University. Maintain good rapport with students and staff within the unit and the University community. Build strong relations by identifying the responding to needs and providing support in the delivery of services. Implement administrative procedures or systems that are moderately complex to support the unit’s operations and to ensure that services meet or exceed established quality requirements.  
Primary Responsibilities:

- Supervise unionized employees and assign work load to maximize use of employees.

- Ability to work with in house dieticians/nutritionist and chefs in conducting and documenting resident assessments.

- Ensure safe food handling and implementation of McGill Food and Dining Services operating standards.

- Position assists employees on the floor during peak meal periods or emergency situation.

- Interacts with guests to obtain feedback on product quality and service levels.

- Supervises staffing levels to ensure that guest service, operational needs and financial objectives are met.

- Ensures all employees have proper supplies, equipment and uniforms.

- Empowers employees to provide excellent customer service within guidelines.

- Handles employees’ questions and concerns.

- Handles guest problems and complaints, seeking assistance from supervisor as necessary.

- Monitors employees to ensure performance expectations are met.

- Provides feedback to employees based on observation of service behaviours.

- Strives to improve service performance.

- Sets a positive example for guest relations.

- Assists in the review of comment cards and guest satisfaction results with employees.

- Supervises daily shift operations.

- Communicates to the Chef Dining Hall any issues regarding food quality and service levels.

- Meets and greets guests.

- Participates in department meetings by communicating a clear and consistent message regarding the departmental goals to produce desired results.

- Ensures compliance with all restaurant policies, standards and procedures.

- Supervises on-going training initiatives.

- Co-ordinate services provided for special events.

- Participate in special projects.


Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

- Experience in hotel and restaurant management (restaurants, food chains, hotels or tourism).

- Experience working in applying sanitation standards as well as strict regulations and procedures.

- Experience supervising staff in a unionized environment.

- Experience using computer systems and software such as Windows, spreadsheets, PPT presentations.

- Strong organizational skills and ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.

- Ability to communicate effectively.

- Must be service oriented, innovative, detail-oriented and quality-conscious.

- English, spoken and written; French, spoken.

Additional Information:

This position is annual and will have variable hours and days. Will include working evenings and weekends. Schedule to be determined.

(MPEX Grade 02) $46,110.00 - $57,640.00 - $69,180.00
