Department/Faculty Summary

Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Content Strategy, the Digital Content Coordinator works with a team to add and maintain web content on ualberta.ca for various colleges, faculties, departments and administrative units. Working within the Cascade CMS, you will lay out web content to create web pages that follow best practice in user experience and SEO. You’ll flex your skills in HTML and CSS (particularly Bootstrap 5 libraries) to create well-designed pages that improve the experience of using the University of Alberta’s websites for everyone.

You will be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and editing of top-level University of Alberta pages and pages owned by External Relations. These activities may include building new web pages, editing current content or redesigning existing pages based on user data and good content design.

You will also be a trusted support for other CMS users by solving the issues and maintaining a knowledge-base about using the CMS. Sharing knowledge with other users is critical to maintaining consistent quality across the university’s websites. You will also be an essential part of institution-wide projects to the university web environment including improvements to SEO, accessibility, page performance, design and user experience.

Duties

Web Page Content Management

  • Responsible for adding new web pages and editing existing web content as requested by communication partners within the colleges, faculties and administrative units.
  • Layout web pages with supplied content with a focus on creating fast-loading, responsive pages that are accessible for all people
  • Responsible for managing and processing incoming support requests for updates and changes to ualberta.ca websites and ensuring clear communication with clients / requestors.
  • Coordinate with communications associates, designers and other content contributors to collect content to update existing web pages and create new pages.
  • Identify when provided content isn’t fit for web pages and work with Senior Content Strategist and communications partners to resolve issues.
  • Design and production of web content using HTML and CSS.
  • Use of CSS library (Bootstrap 5) to design responsive pages that work on mobile and desktop browsing.
  • Responsible for creating and editing content for External Relations’ website as directed by the manager.

Institution-wide Website Improvements

  • Work across teams within External Relations to test content and improve usability and conversion rates.
  • Proactively monitor and fix errors identified through 404 reports, broken link reports, and other regular content maintenance tasks.
  • Assist with ensuring content is accurate by using CMS tools to schedule regular reviews.
  • Responsible for ensuring best practice in accessibility, SEO, responsive design, and site performance are adhered to when creating content and updating content.
  • Assist large-scale projects to improve the university’s web environment and page content.
  • Work with the Digital Strategy team to ensure proper tracking is implemented on web content where appropriate (i.e. click tracking, conversion tracking).

CMS User Community Support

  • Responsible for responding to Help Desk Requests from web CMS users.
  • Share best practices for SEO, usability and design with web CMS users across campus 
  • Create help documentation to share with users and pre-emptively prevent errors through education
  • Collect feedback from CMS users to propose improvements to the CMS or the website

Minimum Qualifications

  • A post-secondary diploma/degree in communications, marketing or web design
  • 1-3 years of experience in digital marketing, preferably in a post-secondary or government environment
  • 1-3 years writing/copy editing
  • Expert knowledge of enterprise Content Management Systems
  • Expert knowledge of best practices for web design including responsive design, SEO, and accessibility
  • Intermediate knowledge of HTML and CSS
  • Intermediate knowledge of CSS Frameworks such as Bootstrap
  • Working knowledge of Google Analytics and other digital analytics/reporting tools.
  • Working knowledge of Google Worksuite tools (documents, sheets, slides, Gmail, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of photo editing tools to crop and compress images
