Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Director, Advancement Strategy and Brand, the incumbent provides strategic communications and marketing advice, focusing on digital solutions, for the Department and its fundraising objectives. The Digital Campaigns Specialist is responsible for planning,
developing, and producing e-marketing and integrated communications campaigns to support University Advancement, strengthen engagement with donors and friends, and forward the goal of a culture of philanthropy at Carleton University. Campaigns are composed of various marketing pieces, including, but not limited to, the management of the FutureFunder website, e-newsletters and stewardship updates to donors, ambassadors and board members, focused marketing efforts in support of mini-campaigns, crowdfunding and annual giving initiatives, and the creation of videos to highlight priority funding areas. In addition the incumbent writes and proofreads a variety of print-based promotional and marketing materials related to alumni and donor engagement and other internal and external communications as required.The incumbent acts as a communications resource for the department, working in conjunction with the Director and Advancement Communications team, donor relations, and other campus marketing and communications resources to develop and implement efficient and effective communication templates, content, and policies in order to maximize fundraising efforts, engagement and outreach. The incumbent ensures the department is maintaining graphic and communication standards; it is essential that all communications materials are produced with the highest standards and convey consistent messaging, accuracy of information, quality of presentation and a common visual identity as they reflect the University’s reputation to its internal and external stakeholders.


Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
• Superior interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
• Proven ability to write and edit working to strict deadlines
• Proven ability to develop and implement innovative and engaging communications, event promotions and marketing plans
• Ability to work with senior management, donors, prominent alumni, faculty, staff, suppliers to the University
• Ability to work simultaneously on numerous and diverse projects
• Ability to work with minimal supervision, in a collaborative team environment
• Exceptional writing, editing and proofreading skills are required, as are familiarity with the technical back-end knowledge of Web design and editing
• Experience with evaluating technologies and communications initiatives
• Experience designing and developing communication strategies, with an emphasis on electronic and social platforms, such as crowdfunding
• Frequent, mandatory overtime work required on weekends and weeknights (2-4 times/month); frequent, mandatory travel to alumni and corporate events (2-4 times/month);
• Exceptional level of professional flexibility, with experience in a fundraising environment


Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
• University honours degree in journalism, communications, marketing or English, and or equivalent work experience
• Five years of progressive related experience, preferably in the area of journalism, communications, specialized marketing, marketing research or e-marketing in an educational or fundraising setting.
• Extensive writing and editing experience is essential.
• Experience writing for the Web is preferred

Important Note Regarding Pandemic Related Operations:

This position is required to work on campus. Exceptionally, since March 2020, many staff and faculty at Carleton University have been working from home in order to comply with public health requirements while continuing to provide services to support the operational functioning of the university. We are currently in the process of identifying positions that need to work on campus as part of our return to campus process. This position may be required to work temporarily remotely due to public health requirements or it may have been identified as one of the roles that are required to work on campus. If this position is required to work on campus, the successful candidate will be informed of the health and safety measures that are in place to ensure their safety on campus. If there is a requirement to work remotely (it is possible that there could be a requirement to work both remotely and on campus), the successful candidate will work with the manager to set up a remote work environment including discussing appropriate technology and requirements. Please note that once public health requirements permit, Carleton University will resume normal on campus operations and at that point there will be a timely notification provided by the manager and the requirement to working full time physically onsite will resume. Therefore, we are looking for candidates currently in or looking to relocate to the Ottawa area.

Additionally, Carleton University is continuing to maintain a safe work environment and requires mandatory vaccination against COVID-19 as per Public Health recommendations under the Reopening Ontario Act. As Carleton University requires that staff be available to attend on-campus meetings and to work, as required, in person, the successful candidate will be required to comply with this policy and be fully vaccinated before commencing employment.
