The Department of University Advancement is recruiting for a Development Officer position to support the Principal Gifts portfolio reporting to the Director, Philanthropy. This critical fundraising role will join a dynamic and collaborative Advancement team as the campus implements a visionary institutional strategic plan, engages with committed alumni, donors and community stakeholders, builds on a new era of holistic integrated partnerships, and continues the momentum of the largest completed campaign in Ottawa’s history.

A key priority for Advancement at Carleton is to facilitate partnerships with purpose and with transformational level donors.

The ideal candidate will have:
• A passion for higher education and the ability to effectively communicate how universities can do good and affect change.
• Experience in building relationships with prospects and loyal donors, aligning their interests with organizational priorities, and developing strategies to secure future gifts.
• Demonstrated experience in inspiring philanthropic investments and building trust.
• A collaborative approach in support of the department’s fundraising and community liaison mandate.
• Competence, attention to detail, professionalism, tact and discretion in dealing with executive and senior leaders across campus as well as external audiences.

As an ambassador for Carleton, this role will require:
• Initiative (to identify and develop sustaining relationships with individuals, corporations and foundations).
• Service-oriented mindset (to support stakeholder requests and effectively steward relationships across campus and externally).
• Creativity and adaptability (to propose and adopt new ways of doing, meet new challenges and define solutions).

NOTE: An essential part of this role is regularly attending faculty and university events online and/or in person, evenings and weekends. Regular travel within Ottawa and some travel outside Ottawa is required.


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible to undertake principal gifts outreach and to manage relationships to raise funds to support university programs and services.


Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
• Knowledge of communications, public relations, marketing and social media processes.
• Knowledge of individual, corporate and foundation fundraising principles, changing philanthropic climate and techniques, and all types of donations, charitable giving and fundraising instruments.
• Knowledge of university’s strategic priorities and goals as well as policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of faculty or department as well as the broader university academic units, departments and divisions.
• Knowledge of office productivity software and databases, internet browsers and search engines, discipline-specific software, enterprise software and technology devices.
• Knowledge of cultural competency and diversity in a business context.


Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
• A Bachelor’s degree.
• Minimum of four years of previous relevant experience.


HR Note:

The Development Officer, Principal Gifts is a full-time TERM position. The starting salary will typically be between the minimum and the mid-point of the full salary range ($65,704 - $75,560) and based on the successful candidate's qualifications and other compensation factors. The total compensation package includes competitive extended health and dental benefits, pension, annual and sick leave, life insurance, and unique perks such as tuition benefits and access to the fitness facilities at Carleton.
