Your opportunity:

Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) is a non-profit organization that delivers an objectives-based program for massively scalable, seed-stage, science- and technology-based companies. Its mission is to accelerate the commercialization of science for the betterment of humankind. CDL is a global program with sites at Oxford, Paris, Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary, Halifax, Atlanta, Seattle, Wisconsin, Estonia, Berlin and Melbourne. The program’s objective-setting process enhances the performance of technical founders who learn from the insights of experienced entrepreneurs, increasing their probability of success. Each stream within each CDL site hosts a series of 4 annual objective-setting sessions that are the primary mechanisms by which the program is delivered. CDL sessions are complex, full-day events thatmay be hosted virtually or in person and that bring together participating start-ups, mentors, partners, and business students. At the end of each annual program cycle, CDL hosts Super Session that brings together graduating start-ups as well as mentors,partners, and students from across the network.

As the Data & Analytics Lead, you will work collaboratively with the SIF Project team to continue building CDL’s research database – the largest such dataset on early-stage science and technology ventures – and leverage the wealth of data collected through the CDL program to generate insights for operational, research, analytic and reporting purposes.

More specifically, the core responsibilities of the Data Analytics Lead will include (1) leadership of all aspects of the development and operations of CDL’s translational database; (2) creation and management of internal and external-facing data products (e.g., reports and dashboards); (3) collaboration with academic leadership and SIF project team to develop analytic methodology that will drive data-driven decision making for the CDL program; (4) communication with diverse stakeholder groups to identify analysis targets, define data collection requirements, prepare and analyze data, present analysis results and discuss interpretation and implications; (5) identification of opportunities to improve data breadth and quality; (6) supervision of small technical teams to implement technical projects; and (7) oversight of all relevant documentation, data governance and data sharing processes within CDL data systems.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and planning IT projects
  • Developing project schedules including milestones, critical path, timelines, deliverables and reporting
  • Analyzing, recommending and designing technical solutions for highly complex IT problems
  • Developing database schemas and sub-schemas
  • Analyzing and documenting business requirements
  • Researching, analyzing and recommending potential changes to system features
  • Generating data quality reports
  • Directing the activities of a group of staff-appointed employees all performing a similar function

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a technical field (e.g. Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Physical Sciences); or acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience. Graduate degree in a data and/or analytics field (e.g. health informatics, statistics, economics, health administration, epidemiology, business administration) is preferred.
  • Eight years (8) or more professional experience in a data and/or analytics field in the publicor private sector
  • Demonstrated experience developing and integrating technical platforms and in managing and leading interdisciplinary teams
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills, able to develop options and recommendations
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to organize, analyze and visualize significant amounts of data with attention to detail and accuracy; demonstrated experience performing various analytic techniques
  • Outstanding time management skills and the proven skills to effectively delegate and supervise large groups spread over a significant area and teams with varying levels of experience and skill
  • Highly organized, with experience managing multiple, complex projects, allocating resources, and negotiating timelines, using sound judgment within a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Ability to handle ambiguity and work effectively in a large, complex, and dynamic organization
  • Demonstrated good judgment, creativity, tact and diplomacy
  • Strong team-oriented work ethic with willingness and ability to work independently and autonomously
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) including the ability to interpret and synthesize research and technical information, prepare briefing notes and reports, and deliver clear, effective, engaging presentations to a variety of audiences
  • Experience in building and maintaining strong stakeholder relationships, including demonstrated experience engaging andbuilding consensus amongst diverse stakeholders, leading meetings, and presenting proposals, analyses and interpretation of results
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and training processes, and development of training resources and materials oncomplex subjects for general audiences
  • Knowledge of confidentiality policies and measures, data governance, and data quality, with experience in developing data management processes and associated documentation
  • Demonstrated professionalism, tact, and maturity in handling highly sensitive and confidential information with discretion
  • Proficiency with Google Suite or Microsoft Office tools including Excel (knowledge of advanced Excel functionality such as macros and pivot tables), Word and PowerPoint
  • Working knowledge of relational database systems (e.g., MSSQL, PostgreSQL, MySQL) and application-to-database connection tools and methods
  • Working knowledge of data visualization tools, such as PowerBI, Tableau or equivalent
  • Working knowledge of SQL, SAS, SPSS and/or other statistical software
  • Working knowledge of technical software (e.g., Salesforce, Slack, Airtable, Zoom, Google)
