Job Description

Under general direction, the Custodian/Housekeeper provides custodial services for University facilities, providing regular cleaning, custodial maintenance and sanitation of common areas of residences, rooms and buildings, cafeteria and gymnasium including the interior building surfaces, fixtures, furnishings and fittings contained within these facilities.  The Custodian/Housekeeper provides heavier cleaning and sanitation of resident dorms when not occupied or on request (e.g. floors, walls, fabrics). The Custodian/Housekeeper maintains a high standard of health and safety by regularly cleaning five houses, 33 executive suites and student dorms located in two separate facilities on the Royal Roads Campus. The Custodian/Housekeeper maintains a high quality of upkeep and detailing of residence accommodation, lounges, hallways, entranceways and University houses and operates with minimal supervision from the Supervisor, Custodial and Housekeeping Services.

The incumbent is responsible for the physical appearance and cleanliness of assigned areas, ensuring they are maintained in accordance with applicable department, statutory codes and regulations, and for promoting the professional image presented by the University.  At times, may be required to meet the operational needs of the P&ER department including working in extreme weather conditions or assisting with other teams.


Job Requirements

Required:

  • Grade 12 certificate from a secondary school, or equivalent
  • One (1) year experience performing related duties in an institutional environment and completion of a recognized Custodial certificate course, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Possession of a valid Class 5 driver’s license in the province of BC
  • Ability to push, pull, and lift up to 50lbs 
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks: physically demanding, bending, crouching, kneeling, weight handling 
  • Ability to engage in walking, standing, lifting, carrying, and climbing for prolonged periods of time 
  • Demonstrated ability to operate machinery needed to perform custodial and housekeeping tasks (vacuums, scrubbing machines, speed buffers, burnishers, rug cleaners) 
  • Experience using cleaning equipment such as brooms, mops, plungers, buckets, pails, carts and common cleaning tools needed for routine tasks 
  • Ability to climb ladders and be comfortable working at heights 
  • Ability to handle chemicals and corrosive materials in a safe, efficient and effective manner according to WorkSafeBC Regulations 
  • Work independently and as part of a team 
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external clients 
  • General knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in the work performed 
  • Availability to work weekday evenings, as well as mornings and evenings over the weekends and holidays.

Preferred:

  • Building Service Worker (BSW) Certificate
  • Knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and the use of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety Policy and procedures 
  • Knowledge of basic computer applications

Additional Information
This is a casual on-call position within the CUPE Local 3886 Bargaining Unit, and we cannot guarantee a set number of hours per week. The hourly rate is $23.96 and the university is pleased to offer a percentage of salary in lieu of benefits as well as evening and weekend premiums.
