This is a permanent position in the department of Chemical Engineering.

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, oversees the day-to-day operations of a teaching laboratory. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others, and participates in their training. Plans and organizes laboratory schedules. Coordinates provision of equipment and materials. Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Liaises between staff and students. Performs duties related to administering laboratory sections and examinations. Coordinates production of course documents. Maintains equipment.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Services and maintains equipment, such as the reserve osmosis systems and all pumps used for fluid mechanics experiments.  Arranges maintenance for machines and equipment when necessary.
  • Performs specialized technical Chemical Engineering tasks such as the calibration of laboratory balances, flowmeters, temperature probes, and readouts.
  • Maintains specialty gases within the laboratory and assists with gas fitting experimental apparatus. 
  • Prepares and modifies protocols for undergraduate teaching for use by students and TAs.  Helps to develops teaching aids for use in courses, such as the development of training programs for safety (i.e. proper handling and use of gas cylinders and regulators, used by new graduate students in CHEE 681 and 682). 
  • Actively participates in the Department’s safety committee in the role of safety coordinator performing duties such as reading/correcting safety questionnaires, safety demonstration scheduling, demonstrating proper use of equipment, participates in safety trainings and lab inspections. Performs weekly eyewash station inspections and quarterly first aid kit inspections/restocking. Handles weekly waste disposal day for liquid chemical and biological waste. 
  • Maintains an inventory of all lab supplies (including gloves, beakers, chemicals, replacement parts, etc.) and makes orders/arrangements when necessary.  Ensures purchases are properly timed for biological organisms with expiration dates. 
  • Keeps records of purchase orders made through McGill Marketplace or purchases through P-card.  Maintains computerized information systems such as myLab (chemical inventory) and Chemical Engineering safety database. 
  • Uses a variety of equipment such as balances, pH meters, pipettors, laminar flow hoods, fume hoods incubators, autoclaves, microscopes, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, chromatography apparatus, chillers, temperature probes and readouts, flowmeters, computers and pumps.

Common Other Qualifying Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated ability to listen and to assist students and staff. Demonstrated organizational skills and the ability to multi-task. Excellent attention to detail. Experience in troubleshooting experimental apparatus including plumbing, electrical and data acquisition interfaces.  Demonstrated ability to organize laboratory schedules. Demonstrated ability to work with web-based course material. Demonstrated experience with combination of technical and functional aspects of simulation technology and equipment, an asset. Must be service oriented with a   proven ability to deal with people at all levels. Experience working and training students in a  laboratory setting. Experience in implementing and ensuring safety standards and practices in the lab. Experience training Teaching Assistants to assist in lab sessions. Strong attention to detail and proven ability to verify work. Knowledge of Chemical Engineering processes or related fields such as Chemical Engineering Technology, Engineering Technology or Industrial Maintenance and Technology.
