Course title: Natural Disasters (3 credits)

Subject Code: EPSC 185

Term: Fall 2024

Location: LEA 132

Schedule: T-R 11:35 am-12:55 pm

Job Description:

Natural Disasters (EPSC 185 / ATOC 185) examines the science behind different types of disasters and our ability or inability to control and predict such events. No region on Earth is immune from natural disasters. As we gain scientific understanding into the causes and nature of such phenomena, we become better able to mitigate the effects of disasters. Yet as the world's population continues to grow, an increasingly large number of people are at risk. From this course the student will gain an appreciation of natural disasters beyond the newspaper headlines and will better understand how the effects of disasters can be reduced.
The course comprises thirteen weeks of classes, typically consisting of two 1.5-hour lectures per week. Assessment includes two term papers, one mid-term exam, and a final exam. You will be responsible for teaching, course management, creating exam materials, some grading, and managing teaching assistants (TA’s). The number of TA’s is linked to the enrolment, which is typically 600-650 students for the two sections of the course.

Teaching Qualification Requirements:
We are looking for an instructor with a PhD or other advanced degree in Earth Sciences or other similar fields and/or prior experience teaching introductory Earth science courses at the university level.
