COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, McGill University, is seeking applications for a Course Lecturer for the Winter 2023 term to teach MIMM 391: SEA-PHAGES: Genome Annotation.

Course overview: As viruses play a major role in the world, including bacteriophages, as they are one of the most abundant viruses on this earth. As such, bacteriophages have a large influence on research and bacterial evolution and there is a need to further studied. Additionally, with more advancements in technology, bioinformatics has continuously shown to be essential in analyzing large data in any scientific field. As part of the SEA-PHAGES (Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science) research team, this course focuses on introducing bioinformatics as a tool to further bacteriophage research by using computer programs and software to annotate genomes of bacteriophages that were discovered from previous cohorts.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Preparing the students with the required knowledge, facilitating classroom discussions, demonstrating and troubleshooting basic bioinformatic software tools, assessing and evaluating student performance.

OTHER MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

•                  Meeting with the SEA-PHAGES team (https://seaphages.org/)
•                  Preparation of assignments, and grading rubrics
•                  Hold regular office hours

TEACHING QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Experience in basic bioinformatics, genomics and/or virology

Education

MSc in Microbiology, Genomics or Genetics (PhD an asset)

Experience

>3 years relevant research experience

Teaching experience (> 2 courses)

Other

Fluency in English (written and verbal)


This course may be taught through remote delivery, in-person or a combination of both as the University will gradually resume its on-campus activities while respecting public health authorities’ COVID-19 recommendations.
