The Postgraduate Medical Education office (PGME) is committed to supporting over 450 residents in 27 residency training programs to ensure exemplary medical education in diverse and supportive environments, with a focus on patient-centered care.


Primary Purpose: The Coordinator, Resident Wellness Resources (Non-academic support) is responsible for the non-academic support across the Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) program. This position is primarily focused on strategic planning, organizational development, and resource planning to support the Resident Resource Office work.  The position is responsible for providing accurate and timely advice to the Associate Dean, PGME Committee, and Program Directors on continuing and emergent issues with respect to resident wellbeing.

Nature of Work: Reporting to the Manager, Postgraduate Medical Education, while taking direction from the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education, this position will work closely with the Coordinator, Resident Wellness Resources to collaboratively ensure residents have access to both professional and personal supports throughout their residency. The successful candidate will establish and maintain professional relationships with various stakeholders including residents, faculty, departments, and outside agencies. The incumbent requires sound judgment, confident decision-making, and the ability to maintain confidentiality. They will work within a team as well as independently while maintaining professional working relationships that support exceptional collaboration and problem-solving. The successful candidate requires the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment while balancing competing deadlines and multiple tasks. All work is to be in line with applicable accrediting bodies’ standards. Some travel within the province is required.

Accountabilities:

Through the provision of services via the Resident Resource Office, this position will hold the following accountabilities:

Wellness and Implementation

  • Proactively engage in and develop organizational strategies to enhance resident well-being, and ensure alignment with the Okanagan charter.
  • Develop health and wellness programming aligned with the eight dimensions of wellness including but not limited to work-life balance and dealing with financial stress.
  • Ensure policies, both University of Saskatchewan (USask) and Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA), are followed and upheld with respect to intimidation and harassment.
  • Provide direction for and access to counseling when residents are coping with stress and fatigue management, adverse events, modified learning plans, academic difficulty, transition, etc.

Resource Coordinator

  • Maintain an up-to-date and comprehensive catalogue of resource materials and information on relevant programs and supports available.
  • Act as a resource for PGME learners seeking advice or information about resources available on or off campus.
  • Participate in and act as a resource to committees such as the PGME Committee and Residency Training Committees.

Liaison and Collaborator Role

  • Identify general issues impacting the resident group and liaise with the PGME Committee.
  • Liaise and coordinate with other departments and units within the University, faculty and external agencies that provide support services to residents.
  • Liaise with other third-party organizations where the Residents are members including, but not limited to CPSS, Resident Doctors of Saskatchewan (RDoS), SHA, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) to understand their policies and codes of conduct.
  • Liaise with other PGME offices across Canada and beyond for evidence of best practices, resources, and tools.

Outreach and Education Role

  • Understand SHA and USask health and safety procedures for resident education and guidance.
  • Develop and disseminate a resident health and education bulletin and an annual report.
  • Identify instances in the academic process where regulations and procedures could be improved.
  • Collaboratively design and deliver specific activities for resident wellbeing, such as workshops, using a cross-functional team which may include the PGME office, different residency programs (Program Directors and Administrators) and other health care professionals and linkages with external agencies such as the SHA, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan (CPSS),SaskDocs and the Saskatchewan Medical Association (SMA).

Non-Academic Support

  • Understand and provide guidance and support to the residents on PGME policies and procedures. Ensure development and implementation of effective policies, procedures and referral mechanisms related to the accommodation of residents with disabilities, including transmissible diseases. This also includes the implementation of specific actions related to accommodation.
  • Liaise both internally, provincially, and nationally with stakeholders for evidence of best practice, resources, and tools for implementation.

Education: Master’s level training in medical education and working with adults, or a master’s level training/background in organizational well-being, social work, human resources, or psychology is required. A combination of education and experience may be considered. Certification in Project Management is an asset.

Experience: At least two to three years of related experience is required. Experience working in a university environment or health care organization coupled with experience working collaboratively with a broad range of medical educators, medical learners and/or health care professionals is considered an asset. Knowledge of postgraduate medical education in Canada and processes and procedures within residency education is considered an asset. Knowledge of and/or experience working with the Okanagan Charter is considered an asset. Experience working in a diverse and inclusive environment is required. 

Skills: A high level of performance competencies in the areas of organizational planning and strategic development; advanced communication skills, including written, verbal, virtual and in-person presentation skills;  demonstrated ability to think and act strategically and exercise diplomacy and creativity in solving issues/conflict; ability to locate needed resources, connect “supply and demand” and find innovative solutions for resource needs; strong evidence of maintaining confidentiality and relationship building; demonstrated professional maturity, judgment and decisiveness; ability to take initiative and be self-directed; project coordination or management capacity, ability to work collaboratively and ensure effective communication among team members; ability to foster a cooperative work environment within a complex partnership/organizational structure; ability to provide technical guidance and leadership to professional staff and clientele in the field; energetic, showing leadership in a highly collaborative manner; proven ability and creativity in negotiating mutually beneficial solutions; ability to make data-driven decisions and demonstrated commitment to quality; proficiency with computer software including Microsoft Office Suite and databases.

Salary:
The salary range, based on 1.0 FTE, is $66,030.00 - 103,174.00 per annum. The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
