Student Services Communications’ team use their expertise in content creation, storytelling and design to create information and messages tailored to McGill students. The team collaborates with subject-matter experts in our service areas to create a wide range of products, including print materials, videos, animations, websites, podcasts, and many others. The AskMcGill team of student navigators are also an integral part of the team, providing students with a single source of information about the services available to them.
Position Summary:
Promote and present a consistent image of McGill as a major institution of international caliber. Develop and implement communication services consistent with the University's mission and objectives, including news, public relations, social media, translation, graphic design, audiovisual, photography, web and multimedia. Promote strong relationships with volunteers, students, employees, external organizations and communities of interest. Organize conferences, symposia, workshops, campaigns and fundraising events. Publish brochures and newsletters. Create and maintain digital communications platforms (web and social media).
Primary Responsibilities:
- Consult and collaborate with Student Services’ stakeholders to implement Student Services’ communications strategy;
- Identify needs, interests and areas of concern for the student population;
- Assist in the coordination of Student Services participation in campus-wide events such as Parent’s Tent, recruitment events, etc.
- Organizes the activities that support the implementation of Student Services’ social media strategy, including functionally supervising a team of student employees involved in content creation and engagement on our online platforms (Facebook, Instagram and others). Participates in measuring and ensuring that the work of the student employees are carried out in accordance with established goals and objectives;
- Help develop strategies to reach students on additional social media platforms;
- Administer Student Services’ web content;
- Administer Student Services’ newsletters for various audiences;
- Provide writing, editing, production, design, acquisition, promotional and marketing support for the activities of Student Services Communications and Student Services’ sub-units as required;
- Write and review web content. Plan, design, build and update websites in the McGill Web Management System (WMS). Write and edit a variety of different types of creative content and copy, as required;
- Maintain good rapport with staff within all units and the University community. Establish and foster effective working relationships with student groups and other units;
- Identify any gaps or problems arising from Student Services’ communications activities and report them the Associate Director; and,
- Administer and participate in special projects, as assigned.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
- Experience in social media community management and developing varied content for multiple platforms.
- Experience in research and proven ability to compose comprehensive, concise articles and web sites with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Must be self-directed and able to work autonomously and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Demonstrated organizational skills; proven ability to manage multiple projects with specific deadlines.
- Familiarity with Student Services, other services at McGill is an asset.
- Must have a client-service orientation with a proven ability to receive, retain and clearly transmit information.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to deal with sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy.
- Professionalism and excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
- Proven success in facilitating and maintaining strong, consistent and positive communications.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a PC and Mac environment using MS Office, desktop publishing, tools to edit and modify web-pages and other electronic media, e-mail and online tools.
- Previous experience working with McGill websites (Drupal) is an asset.
- Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 4 (fluent) on a scale of 0-4.

- Monday to Friday, 33.75 hrs per week.
