Duties and Responsibilities:

The Commercialization Officer supports technology commercialization activities within Carleton University’s Industry and Partnership Services (IPS). This position is responsible for seeking out commercialization opportunities to promote the innovations disclosed to Carleton. The Commercialization Officer will assess the commercial potential of innovations by conducting market and industry analysis, identifying potential partners, and developing marketing material. We anticipate these disclosures to be primarily in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) / Artificial Intelligence (AI) / Machine Learning (ML) /Quantum Computing and related fields. The Commercialization Officer presents findings and recommendations commercialization outreach strategies to the Assistant Director and/or Manager, Innovation Transfer.

Key Accountabilities:
• Develops and implements general and technology specific marketing strategies.
• Reviews technologies from Carleton faculty to assess commercial value and path to market.
• Conducts market research to identify potential development and licensing partners.
• Evaluates market potential of faculty innovations by researching the target market (e.g., size, dynamics, barriers to entry, unmet needs, etc.) as well as pathway to market.
• As requested by the Assistant Director, presents and markets technologies at local industry conferences.
• Creates impactful, non-confidential marketing materials (e.g., brochures, websites, flyers, graphics, posters, marketing sheets) for potential commercial partners and licensees.
• Performs financial analyses and valuations of technology disclosures.
• Compiles and tracks commercial outreach activities, responses and follow up actions for all technologies in the group’s Outreach Log.
• Provides updates on the status of analysis and outreach activities to the Assistant Director.
• Performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
• Knowledge of business development, contract and agreements, and intellectual property program design, delivery, assessment, and evaluation methodologies, processes, and practices.
• Knowledge of relevant governing legislation, collective agreements, policies, and procedures.
• Knowledge of the broader university academic units, departments, and divisions.
• Knowledge of office productivity software and databases, internet browsers and search engines, discipline-specific software, enterprise software, and technology devices.
• Demonstrated ability to explain early-stage technologies to prospective industry partners.
• Strong interpersonal skills that demonstrate positive interactions with others and provide reliable follow up with customers.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct research independently, to understand complex technologies and develop concise, clear synopses of market information.
• Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple projects and priorities, and dealing efficiently with deadlines and time constraints.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, with ability to present information clearly and concisely to varied audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to deal with confidential material and sensitive client interaction issues with tact and discretion.
• Knowledge of cultural competency and diversity.


Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
• Completion of an undergraduate degree in systems or computing engineering or information technology or related discipline. Master’s degree will be preferred.
• Minimum of two years' of previous experience in marketing technologies.
• A track record in business development or marketing would be an asset.

This position is regularly required to work on campus in person. If required to work remotely, you will be notified by your manager when working full time physically onsite will resume.
