Duties and Responsibilities:

Working under the direction of the Assistant Manager, Co-Op Operations, the Co-op Student Advisor, the primary point of contact for co-op students, is responsible for the success of Carleton’s co-op students through effective delivery of co-op preparation and advising programs for undergraduate and graduate co-op students. Additionally, the Coop Student Advisor provides input into the development of the co-op preparation program and delivers the on-line course. S/he advises undergraduate and graduate coop students with regard to the career development process including self-assessment, researching occupations, making informed career decisions, marketing themselves, helping students develop strategies for success on the job and helps with the transition from school to work and work to school. S/he organizes and implements supplementary workshops designed to support and enhance the on-line programming to ensure that all co-op students are well prepared to enter the work force. The co-op student advisor is responsible for student success on the work term and conducts site visits with students.


Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills;
• Excellent interpersonal and advising skills;
• Experience in motivating and educating individuals and groups, particularly postsecondary students, on the technicalities of a job search, including resume review and interviewing techniques;
• Must have a strong customer service focus and possess strong problem-solving skills;
• Ability to work individually and as part of a team;
• Ability to multi-task with tight deadlines;
• Proficient with student information database software (e.g. Orbis) and MS Office;
• Proven ability to communicate with tact, empathy and discretion;
• The ability to maintain confidentiality is essential;
• Knowledge of undergraduate and/or graduate programs and co-op programs;
• This position will require the use of an automobile and must possess a valid driver’s license.


Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
• A 4-year University Degree in a discipline related to social sciences, business, education or social work; or the equivalent of a Bachelor’s degree
• 4-5 years of experience in counselling, training, employment programs or HR/recruitmentrelated roles. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate experience with supporting job seekers in a post-secondary environment.
