Your opportunity:

The University of Toronto Scarborough has been a leader in co-operative education and work integrated learning (WIL), for 40 years. Co-op and WIL give students an opportunity to apply skills learned in the classroom, and to expand their knowledge through related work experience. The Department of Arts and Science Co-op is responsible for preparing over 2,700 undergraduate students from 37 academic areas to complete for paid co-op work term opportunities. The department is also responsible for engaging industry partners who provide these work terms. A coordinated effort among the stakeholders of student, employer, and university co-op programming contribute to the development of well qualified graduates who are prepared to assume a productive role in society. With a commitment to the equity, diversity and inclusion and the campus’ ‘Inclusive Excellence’ mission, the department works closely with academic departments and support services on campus and with employer and community partners to support students as they work to achieve their academic and co-op/integrated learning aspirations.

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Student Services, the incumbent will work with Arts & Science Co-op students to develop and implement plans/initiatives to enhance the student success and engagement activities for co-op students of known groups which face barriers to success in the Arts & Science co-op program and employment process. The initial groups of focus will be international students and students with disabilities; however, part of the role is to recognize the diverse intersections within the co-op community and identify specific and systemic barriers that underrepresented groups face which impact their success within the program. The incumbent will identify and make recommendations on ways that the co-op program can eliminate, reduce or provide support to overcome these barriers. The incumbent should be a strong collaborator with campus partners such as AccessAbility Services, the International Student Centre, the Health and Wellness Centre, and the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Office to develop and deliver programming specific to co-op students with equity, diversity and inclusion and AODA mandates to increase career and employment support and opportunities and empower marginalized students during the preparation, recruitment, transition to the workplace, and while in the workplace stages of the program. This will involve being part of the student support team, developing plans to aid in student success throughout their time in the co-op program, developing and delivering components of collaborative programming with other student service areas, managing a student case load and being the consistent point of contact for students who identify as part of these student groups.

They will be part of the team of support for students in A&S Co-op and serving as a resource to Coordinators in the Arts & Science Co-op department while being the point of contact for other student services areas with the A&S Co-op office. They will amend existing resources to ensure that resources remove barriers which prevent students from being successful. They will support the coop team to identify the structures, systems, and practices which add additional burdens to students as a result of their social location.
