Clinical Trials Research Nurse Coordinator, Cardiac Sciences

Position Overview

The Department of Cardiac Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Clinical Trials Research Nurse. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator and works within the framework of the University & Cumming School of Medicine Policies and Procedures, as well as within the Foothills Interventional Cardiology Service specific Clinical Research Standards of Practice (SOPs).

This is a recurring part-time position.  Recurring part-time employees are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule. 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Site preparation for research project:
    • Facilitate and coordinate pre-study site visits
    • Prepare regulatory documents for sponsor (e.g. 1572 form, Investigation New Drug Application (IND) form, curriculum vitae, CHREB membership, lab-related documents)
    • Prepare space for study-related equipment and supplies (e.g. storage of study research product, Case Report Forms (CRFs)
    • Educate staff impacted by the study regarding aspects of research project
    • Present clinical trial time lines to study team (e.g. enrolment, completion, advertising, schedules)
    • Train/educate ancillary staff regarding clinical trial (e.g. pharmacist, medical technician)
    • Integrate accepted clinical trial with current research activity
    • Coordinate study initiation
  • Patient Recruitment/Screening/Scheduling:
    • Develop screening tool and screening log
    • Participate in study subject recruitment per Health Information Act (HIA); AHS and UofC guidelines
    • Liaise with health care providers
    • Maintain screening log
    • Review eligibility with Principal Investigator and primary care physician
  • Protocol Evaluation:
    • Collaborates with research team to determine feasibility of the research project.Includes the following:
      • Protocol development
      • Review and assess protocol
      • Subject population availability, ie inclusion/exclusion criteria
      • Database needs and develop as required
      • Personnel required to conduct the clinical trial
      • Facility and equipment availability
      • Feasibility of protocol timelines
  • Liaison between research team and sponsors:
    • Propose and negotiate alternatives for protocol implementation
    • Processing of regulatory documentation
    • Solicitation of new studies through networking
    • Attend and participate in Investigator's meetings with Sponsor, locally and nationally
    • Responsibly for acquisition, submission and obtaining appropriate signatures on legal documents
    • Financial structure responsibilities:
    • Review and evaluation of clinical trial financial agreement
    • Prepare and/or negotiate the budget for clinical trials
    • Determine anticipated study-related costs (e.g. fixed fees, overhead, direct and indirect costs)
  • Subject Management:
    • Assist with the development and/or delivery of study information to ensure subject receives appropriate information prior to informed consent
    • Maintain ongoing communication with subject's primary physician
    • Plan and coordinate all tests, procedures or evaluations required by the protocol in a safe, effective and timely manner
    • Educate subject regarding medical condition and protocol requirements
    • Ensure compliance through education, support and monitoring progress
    • Liaise and refer, as appropriate, with other health care professionals throughout study
    • Document and follow study drop-outs and withdrawals
    • Provide unblinding information to subject and primary care provider as appropriate
    • Drug access studies: enable access to medications pending licensure to provide expanded treatment options to patients
  • Research Drug/Product Accountability:
    • Receive, store and acknowledge drug/product from Sponsor and inventory according to FDA and TPD guidelines
    • Dispense drug/product to study subjects
    • Retrieve drug/product from subject and calculate compliance
    • Document drug accountability

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Baccalaureate in Nursing
  • Current CARNA required
  • Certification in BCLS & IV therapy required
  • Certification in an accredited research course, SOCRA and/or ACRP accreditation, an asset
  • 7-10 years of related nursing experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of Cardiovascular nursing experience required
  • Research Coordinator experience preferred
  • Critical Care Experience an asset
  • Demonstrated technical dexterity, knowledge and skill working with computer technology - required
  • Demonstrated ability to function independently and effectively in team situations both within and across departments and other organizations to achieve optimal collective results
  • Strong leadership, communication (ability to share information in an effective collaborative manner) and decision making skills - required
  • Demonstrated strong organizational and interpersonal skills - required
  • Ability to be creative, and demonstrate initiative to generate improvements and foster positive outcomes - required
  • Demonstrated superior physical and emotional assessment skills - required
  • Working knowledge of current initiatives within the Department of Cardiac Sciences: ACS Guidelines - essential
