Department/Faculty Summary

The Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI) supports research excellence dedicated to improving the health outcomes of women and children. WCHRI was founded in 2006 as a partnership between the University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services, with core funding from the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation (SCHF) and the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation (RAHF). Thanks to our funders’ generosity, WCHRI is able to support a broad range of research programs for over 430 researchers.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Clinical Research Director at WCHRI and the Principal Investigator (PI), the successful candidate will coordinate research projects for the Edmonton Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center (EPIC), led by Principal Investigator, Dr. Hien Huynh of the Division of Gastroenterology and Nutrition, Department of Pediatrics.

The Clinical Research Coordinator will be responsible for recruiting potential study participants for clinical research protocols; maintaining compliance with regulatory, ethics and other stipulations as necessary; administering health care services, and building and maintaining a network of contacts internally and externally, to help promote research within EPIC.

Duties

  • As part of the clinical research team within the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI) and EPIC:
  • Participates in study-related meetings such as site evaluations, site initiations, close-out visits, investigator meetings, monitor-visits and study-conference calls
  • Adheres to standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), International Conference on Harmonization (ICH), Good Clinical Practices (GCPs), and Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPs), and other applicable regulatory requirements
  • Prepares Human Research Ethics Board (HREB) submissions, including informed consents and maintains trial related documents
  • Negotiate budgets with sponsor; tracks financials and report discrepancies to PI
  • Obtain consent from parent and/or patients; collect and organize data associated with research projects (may include collecting blood samples)
  • Patient education and counselling regarding protocol requirements, treatment schedule and the use of data collection tools
  • Organize ongoing study participant follow up, including arranging lab work, appointments and facilitation of ongoing therapy
  • Administers medications and infusions (or organize administration with clinical nursing staff); collects blood, urine, tissue and other samples as required and monitors patient safety

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Science or health degree; preferably supplemented by training and/or experience in a pediatric environment. Combination of education and experience considered.
  • Computer proficiency using MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to work in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision
  • Precise documentation skills/detail oriented
  • Willingness to work flexible hours to fulfill the responsibilities of the position
  • Ability to work efficiently in a professional and ethical manner in accordance with University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services policies and procedures

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum two years of research support experience an asset
  • Ability to conduct venipuncture in children an asset
  • Certification with ACRP or SoCRA an asset
  • Experience working with children and their families an asset
  • Experience with the University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services an asset
