Chemistry Department Chair

The Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta is looking to fill the position of Chair, Department of Chemistry as of July 1, 2022. Candidates must be existing full-time academic faculty members who have a tenured appointment in a relevant field at the University of Alberta.

The Department of Chemistry has 34 tenured/tenure-track faculty members and 6 academic teaching staff who are recognized for their excellence in research and teaching at the international, national, and university level. The Department’s research and teaching programs are supported by a number of technical services and scientific facilities, such as Mass Spectrometry and NMR.  

The Department’s student population includes approximately 224 graduate students, 66 undergraduate honors and specialization students and over 300 undergraduate majors. Approximately 4,500 undergraduate students are enrolled in Chemistry courses each term.

The Department’s annual operating grant totals approximately $15 million dollars of expenditures, while annual research funding expenditures total approximately $20 million dollars. 

The Department of Chemistry Executive team comprises the Chair, the Associate Chairs of Undergraduate Studies, Graduate Studies, and Research, and the Academic Department Manager.

Applicants must have demonstrated leadership abilities, as well as a vision to maintain and strengthen the department’s excellent national and international reputation. The ideal candidate will also have shown leadership in external engagement and alumni/community relations, and have a vision to support equity, inclusion and diversity within the department. The candidate should also consider approaches to stewarding the Department of Chemistry through the University of Alberta for Tomorrow process. The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline and have a solid academic record in teaching, research, including an established funded research program, and service.
