The McGill Library seeks a collaborative, user-centred, tech-savvy and highly motivated individual for the position of Cataloguing Librarian. This member of Collection Services works with metadata and library systems to describe and catalogue material in all formats and a variety of languages. They will participate in the NACO authority programme and cataloguing projects. As needed, they will work with metadata in batches and use editing tools. The ideal candidate possesses strong problem-solving skills and works well in a team environment.

INFORMATION FOR PROSPECTIVE STAFF
Information about the University and the McGill Library can be found on the University’s web site. As a tenure stream appointee, the successful candidate is expected to satisfy the requirements in the Regulations Relating to the Employment of Librarian Staff.

DUTY STATEMENT
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Interpret and apply guidelines, policies, and best practices for cataloguing and resource description, as well as procedures to create, verify, and edit metadata in the areas of descriptive cataloguing, subject cataloguing, and classification.
• Ensure effective and appropriate intellectual access is provided to the collections.
• Balance activities related to cataloguing in various formats with other cataloguing responsibilities and duties.
• Maintain an in-depth knowledge of various in-house and external library systems related to cataloguing and authorities.
• Work in partnership with other Library staff and sections, as well as external groups, on specific projects, leading such projects when necessary.

Reporting relationship
The Cataloguing Librarian reports to the Coordinator Cataloguing and Metadata, Collection Services.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Required:

1. ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science or equivalent.
2. Demonstrated experience in cataloguing, and the application of guidelines, policies, and best practices for metadata creation, including international standards and controlled vocabularies.
3. Ability to work effectively autonomously and collaboratively in a team environment.
4. Ability to understand and respond to priorities and trends in the Library and University environments.
5. Customer-focused; ability to turn user needs into recommendations for improved workflows and processes.
6. Evidence of commitment to meeting the needs of diverse populations of users and staff.
7. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including abilities in both English and French. McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing.
8. Demonstrated creative and analytical thinking skills, good problem solving ability and attention to detail.

Preferred:
9. Knowledge of tools to assist in the large-scale creation and processing of e-resources metadata, such as MARCEdit and OpenRefine.
10. Experience cataloguing a variety of formats of materials, in a variety of languages.
11. Project management experience.
