Casual Students, Interior Design

Updated: 6 days ago
Location: Calgary, ALBERTA
Deadline: 24 Apr 2024

Founded in 1910 and located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Mount Royal University grew into a vibrant college in the 1930s and became a mid-sized university in 2009. Mount Royal has carved out a distinct niche by offering smaller class sizes, a robust liberal education and unique undergraduate programs. Currently, more than 15,000 credit students choose from 14 bachelor degrees and 40 majors.

Mount Royal University is located in the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut'ina and the Iyarhe Nakoda. We are situated on land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. The traditional Blackfoot name of this place is "Mohkinstsis," which we now call the city of Calgary. The city of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation.

Mount Royal University is committed to removing barriers and fostering the inclusion of voices that have been historically underrepresented or discouraged in our society. In support of our belief that diversity in our faculty and staff enriches the work, learning and research experiences for the entire campus community, we strongly encourage members of the designated groups (women, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, members of visible minorities, and diverse sexual orientation and gender identities) to apply and self-identify.

Mission:  Our mission is to provide a holistic, interactive learning community that prepares graduates for the complex and dynamic practice of interior design.

Pedagogy: Our educational philosophy integrates theory, research and practice to develop students’ critical thinking skills as they contemplate and solve real-world problems through ethical, human-centered, inclusive, integrated and sustainable design considerations.

Values: Building on its history at MRU and the location in Calgary, with a commitment to supportive learning, inclusiveness and equity, the Interior Design program values:

  • Learners from diverse contexts who are compelled to engage in the process of design and are motivated to improve the quality of life for people in the built environment;
  • Faculty of professional designers, architects and scholars who are committed to innovative, interactive teaching approaches that engage and empower students to achieve their design potential;
  • Alumni who contribute to the larger community, the interior design profession, MRU and to the growth of our students; and the
  • Mount Royal community that supports the delivery of innovative teaching and learning practices.

About the Project

Students will work collaboratively as a group and with faculty on the following tasks: to develop the online publication documents, prepare design portfolio documents, and publish the prepared design portfolio documents online.

The student team will be supervised and guided by the program faculty, meet in person per a project schedule, and collaborate through a shared remote document drive. The time commitment is part time and the project schedule will be established by the assembled team.
