Offer Description
This research project is relative to the behaviour and design of small to middle span pedestrian bridges made of aluminium I-beams topped by a wooden platform. Focus is here on the aluminium beams, for which improvements for an economic and rational design approach are sought for.
Structural problems of interest are here: (i) lateral torsional buckling of the aluminium girder between bracing points, (ii) plastic resistance of the I-sections that accounts for the non-linear material response of aluminium, (iii) local buckling effects in slender sections and (iv) influence of the heat-affected zones in welding areas on the overall resistance.
This project involves some 20 full-scale tests on aluminium beams, as well as extensive F.E. non-linear shell analyses. The outcome should be a new set of economic and sound design recommendations that shall be provided to engineers and designers, e.g., through updated code provisions.
The project involves several private Engineering firms and is primarily funded by FRQNT, Québec’s research fund for innovation.
We are supporting 2 PhD students within this project, through research grants worth 23 000 $CAD per year (net income), over 3 years. Interested applicants must hold an MSc degree within Structural or Mechanical Engineering and send an updated scientific CV + motivation letter to Prof. Nicolas Boissonnade before June, 30th, 2023. Selection will be based on academic excellence and research potential. Experience on non-linear F.E. analysis or Structural Engineering testing would be an asset. Also, ability to speak French is a bonus but is not mandatory.
Funding category: Financement public/privé
23000 $CAD/an (sous forme de bourse, pas de taxes)
PHD title: Doctorat en Génie Civil
