Associate Professor - Industrial Ecology / Life Cycle Assessment

The Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design (TISED) at the McGill University Faculty of Engineering invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Associate Professor level. Established in 2012 through a gift from the Trottier Family Foundation, TISED informs and educates decision-makers and the public about sustainability issues, and supports research and teaching on sustainability in engineering and design. Position Description:

The successful candidate will lead an internationally recognized research program in sustainable engineering and design and contribute to the growth of interdisciplinary research and teaching through TISED. The successful applicant has research and teaching expertise in areas such as industrial ecology, life cycle analysis, and circular economy/engineering. Application areas are, but not restricted to the following list:

• Prospective life-cycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic assessment of emerging/next-generation technologies for solving sustainability challenges related to energy systems, built infrastructure and transportation, or processing and manufacturing;

• Macro-level resource and climate scenario analysis methods for more holistic assessment of transition pathways;

• Efficient material flows and circular economy;

• Improved models of urban metabolism for studying the life-cycle intersections of energy, water and materials provisioning services;

• Methods and frameworks for advancing social LCA for considering the distributional and social implications of engineering and design towards creative decision-making.

This is an interdisciplinary position and the candidate will hold a joint appointment at TISED and any one of the six departments or two schools at the Faculty of Engineering . The candidate will also be active in public outreach on sustainability issues and policy, and in advancing TISED’s strategic goals.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

Candidates must have a Ph.D., preferably with a first degree in engineering, architecture or urban planning. Evidence of outstanding research achievements or research potential, is essential. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to McGill’s mission through outstanding activities in research, teaching and service. Experience in academic program administration will be an asset.  Although applications at the Associate Professor level are sought, applications at the Assistant Professor level may be considered based on exceptional qualifications.

Preferred qualifications include dedication to an environment that supports diversity of population and perspectives; as our students come from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and backgrounds, we invite candidates to address in their application their ability to teach, supervise, and mentor in this context. Membership or eligibility for membership in a Canadian professional engineering association is required for those candidates that will be jointly appointed with an engineering department.
