About us:

The University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) system is the largest academic library in Canada and is ranked sixth among peer institutions in North America. The system consists of 42 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of over 280 graduate programs, including over 60 professional programs, and about 700 undergraduate degree programs. In addition to more than 15 million volumes in 341 languages, the library system currently provides access to millions of resources in various forms, including, for example, electronic, audio-visual, and geospatial materials. UTL also has over 31,000 linear metres of archival material. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year. The Libraries' data centre houses more than 500 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes.

Your opportunity:

Reporting to the Scholars Portal Director, you will lead the Systems team in planning, implementing, and maintaining the technical infrastructure that supports all Scholars Portal Services. You will lead a highly technical team of systems operations specialists, identify spending priorities for hardware & software purchases throughout the year, and develop spending projections for the three-year budget planning process, while ensuring all University/Library guidelines for procurement are followed. You will work closely with other Scholars Portal staff, as well as the University of Toronto Libraries Information Technology Services department, to support the Scholars Portal/UTL Data Centre and Scholars Portal services.

As a member of the senior management group, you will participate in planning and coordinating the department’s overall workplan and activities and provide guidance to relevant OCUL committees and groups by request.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Analyzing, recommending and designing technical solutions for highly complex IT problems
  • Planning and implementing security measures to safeguard database information
  • Analyzing and recommending suitability of major new equipment or software systems
  • Leading and planning IT projects
  • Developing and updating architectural framework for highly complex and confidential university-wide databases
  • Analyzing and implementing technical solutions in response to system performance review
  • Planning and implementing IT systems independently
  • Directing the activities of a group of staff-appointed employees all performinga similar function

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree (Computer Science or Software Engineering) or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Eight years or more related experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with RedHat, Ubuntu, and CentOS Linux, Sun Solaris, Windows Server
  • Demonstrated experience with database management with mySQL, SQLServer, Postgress, and MarkLogic
  • Demonstrated experience with search engine technologies (Lucene/Solr, MarkLogic)
  • Experience with high-performance multi-CPU and clustered server hardware
  • Experience with management of federated identity management frameworks such as Shibboleth
  • Experience with management of geospatial systems using ARCGIS 
  • Configuration Management DevOps tools such as CHEF, JENKINS
  • Management of Cloud Infrastructure (OpenStack), with a proven focus on scalability and security.
  • Experience in Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) tools
  • Experience in Version Control (GIT) and Project Management (JIRA) tools
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment, including the ability to communicate technical concepts to team members with limited technical backgrounds
  • Solid knowledge of library operations in an academic setting, including common data formats, concepts related to digital preservation, scholarly publishing support, and electronic resource management and licensing
  • Relevant post-graduate training courses and/or certifications in any of the following:o project management, database management, search engine management, performancemonitoring and tuning, software development methodologies, web application support, risk management and disaster planning, staff supervision and training.

USW Pay Band 18 -- $112,241 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $143,537. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
