Job Summary

  • The Associate Director, Nurse Practioner works collaboratively within a student-centered, multidisciplinary and integrated team with a coordinated approach to ensure safe, effective, and timely primary health care to the student population at UBC Vancouver.
  • This role provides leadership to a growing Nurse Practitioner team who provide services at multiple clinic locations on campus and through telehealth.
  • The Associate Director, Nurse Practitioner is responsible for promoting excellence and advancing professional practice of the NP team and the strategic directions of Student Health & Wellbeing.
  • Ensures services and programs are consistent with the purpose and commitments of Student Health and Wellbeing, and in accordance with standards of the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Provides expert leadership, consultation, advice and assistance to units across Student Health and Wellbeing on projects and initiatives.  
  • Collaborates with a wide variety of people, including the NPs, operational, and clinical leaders to: identify desired practice outcomes; develop, implement and monitor work plans/projects; foster and mentor other NPs; inform strategic plans; and report on activities to SHW leadership.


Organizational Status

  • Reporting to the Director, Student Health Service, the Associate Director, Nurse Practitioner is responsible for the clinical direction and advancement of Nurse Practitioner services at SHS.
  • Works independently but also as part of a collaborative team that provides a full range of primary care and health services and programs. 
  • Consults, confers, refers and collaborates both on campus with other university departments (staff, faculty and students), and also, off campus with health care and social service providers. 
  • SHS is under the Vice President, Students (VPS) portfolio and may need to liaise with other members of staff and leaders in VPS, including the Associate Vice President, Student Health.



Work Performed

Primary Care Collaborative Care Leadership

  • In partnership with the Associate Director, Collaborative Practice, Physician Lead and Nursing Lead, ensure clinical policies, procedures and protocols are developed, communicated, and revised on a regular basis to ensure best practices.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of a Team-Based Care model of care in SHW. Considers implications for NP staff in developing processes, protocols and policies to ensure effective team-based care.
  • Understands and assesses the current patient flow and designs improvements that supports best practices, improved client access, efficient flow of clients across the care continuum, and enhancement of a team-based approach. Develops and documents implementation plans, presents recommendations, and ensures deliverables are on time and within mandate.
  • Provide leadership and expert consultative advice on nurse practitioner issues, including scope of practice, clinical informatics, resource planning and research to enhance the practice environments and achieve effective and efficient quality of care. Promotes consistent care to our patients, through standardization, integration and promotion of evidence informed best and wise practices. Develops, implements and evaluates policies and procedures related to nurse practitioners, collaborative and multidisciplinary care, and health system practices.
  • The Nurse Practitioner provides professional guidance to other health professionals and practices autonomously and interdependently within the context of a collaborative/team-based care team.
  • Participates in research contributing to improved patient/student outcomes and advances in nurse practitioner practice, health policy development and population health.
  • Participates in nurse practitioner education through case presentations, mentoring, role modeling and facilitating the exchange of knowledge.
  • Promotes a supportive, collaborative and continuous improvement environment for all staff using a team-based approach.
  • Develops goals and objectives for projects by facilitating and supporting team activities, defining and analyzing issues, guiding and directing health practice projects through developing workplans to plan, organize, direct and control projects, in consultation with the Director and clinical leadership.

Staff Management

  • Manages all Nurse Practitioners in the SHS. Defines work assignments, duties and responsibilities of these positions. Adjusts priorities in response to changing student care requirements and fluctuating workload volumes in collaboration with the team and flow of academic year.
  • Functions as a systems leader and change agent, and is responsible for providing leadership of the SHS Nurse Practitioners.
  • Responsible for recruitment of NP staff in partnership with the Director, SHS and other leaders of the SHW portfolio.
  • Identifies staffing needs to ensure appropriate, effective clinical care for students.
  • Develops and implements training plans for new and updated clinical activities for NP staff. Researches and recommends opportunities for continuous learning and development for all clinical staff. Supports and approves professional development activities for clinical and professional staff as appropriate.
  • Arranges performance evaluations for NP staff. Addresses performance issues and manages disciplinary matters. Provides leadership and guidance when conflicts occur.
  • Identifies opportunities for professional development for NP and other staff, including supervising research and teaching learners within the department. Manages learners and learning opportunities for NP students.
  • The position participates in peer review and self-review to evaluate the outcome of services at the patient and systems level.

Clinical Practice

  • Responsible for a full range of primary care issues including mental, physical and social health acting within the scope and standards of practice set by the BCCNM. Be proficient in complex assessment, diagnosis, and treatment/ management planning in accordance with the statutory and regulatory standards of the BCCNM, limits, and conditions, and employer policies and procedures. Makes referrals to specialist physicians and others as appropriate.
  • Actively provides care through prescheduled and same day appointments. Care modalities are offered in-person and virtually.
  • Ensures clinical services are provided in ways that are sensitive and responsive to the broad range of diversity within the student population including, but not limited to gender, race, culture, ability, and sexual orientation.

Strategic Activities

  • The position collaborates with patients/students and health professionals to identify and assess trends and patterns that have implications for students at UBC; develops and implements population and evidence-based strategies to improve health.
  • Ensuring pertinent information is communicated to team members and others in accordance with professional and unit standards.
  • Collaborates with clinical and administrative support staff to enhance current strategies and develop new strategies to continuously improve services.
  • Work in close collaboration with the clinical and medical leadership of SHS in the development programs and services that align with professional standards and practice, scope and regulations. Oversees research activities, and foster collaboration and problem solving between programs, projects and staff.
  • Participates in leadership and strategic direction discussions, where relevant clinical involvement is required.
  • Participates in University committees in relation to health and wellness, where relevant clinical involvement is required.
  • Foster strategic and working relationships with on- and off-campus partners that result in sharing of knowledge, monitoring practice trends, identification of opportunities to promote innovation, exploration and partnerships for improvement, and ensuring consistent delivery of quality practice/services throughout SHW and SHS.


Consequence of Error/Judgement

Must be able to act with a considerable degree of autonomy and independence in the development and provision of nurse practitioner practice, services and programs for student, while adhering to the practice and ethical standards of the profession.  Poor professional judgement or unethical practice could be extremely detrimental to client/student well being and create situations of legal liability for the University.

The position has access to sensitive and confidential information, the untimely or inappropriate release of which could cause acute embarrassment to the University, as well as litigation. Incorrect decisions/judgement will directly affect the UBC’s reputation with the employer, health authorities, community and faculty, staff, alumni, and students.


Supervision Received
Reports to the Director, Student Health Service. Works independently and interdependently within clinical and ethical guidelines and a model of collegial consultation and collaboration. Informs Director of important issues related to the medical services of the SHS clinics.
Supervision Given
Provides leadership and supervision to all Nurse Practitioner staff within the two SHS clinics at the UBC Vancouver Campus. Supervises NPs by providing guidance and mentorship, ensuring appropriateness of job responsibilities, providing or directing the provision of medical training and development, evaluating performance, and responding to complaints, concerns and grievances. provide direction and assistance for contracted professionals (e.g. nurse clinicians and physicians) and providers from off campus organizations when appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree in nursing. Current registration as a Nurse Practitioner with the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals.  Minimum of five years of related experience, or
the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current registration as a Nurse Practitioner with the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals and recent relevant clinical nursing experience.
  • Master’s Degree in nursing with minimum of five (5) to ten (10) year’s recent, related experience in a primary care environment.
  • Five (5) years’ experience in leadership, administration, and program development in health-related services.
  • Experience in coordination of services in clinical setting.
  • Commitment to serving the needs of a broadly diverse student population. Proven sensibility and appreciation of the role that indigeneity, gender, race, disability, gender identity, sexuality, social background play in the experience of health, wellbeing, and health promotion and education in a university setting. Demonstration of commitment to social justice, inclusion, diversity, and health equity.
  • Experience within a health care environment including experience working in a primary care setting or equivalent patient care environment is preferred. Strong knowledge of provincial health legislation, administrative processes and systems.
  • Possession of personal attributes that facilitate teamwork and the development of effective working relationships with a wide range of students, faculty, and staff. Strong interpersonal, supervisory, organizational, leadership, management, public speaking, and communication skills. Demonstrated advanced ability to plan, organize, set and accomplish objectives and goals.
  • Ability to use a collaborative approach to problem solving supported by a systems approach. Demonstrated commitment to collaborative practice and continued learning and effectiveness in promoting the value of learning and acquiring new information and skills to staff. Demonstrated ability to analyze and problem solve issues that may arise in carrying out the duties of this position efficiently and resourcefully.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of professional practice, nursing regulations and nursing standards and application of these across the continuum of care. Facilitates, collaborates and negotiates for effective resolution of practice issues.
  • Keeps informed about evolving trends and practices, shares knowledge and supports Nurse Practitioners to integrate evidence-based practice in the delivery of quality care/services.
  • Ability to critically assess and evaluate health research literature to determine best practices; Ability to assess and recognize primary care and population health trends; ability to plan and implement strategies for improved primary care services.
  • Extensive experience/base in clinical practice document/protocol development and implementation.
  • Extensive understanding of Health Professions Act.
