The Faculty of Engineering and Design (FED) invites nominations and applications from qualified candidates for a position of Associate Dean (Director: Master of Engineering – Engineering Practice), which is underpinned by a tenured faculty position (Associate or Full Professor), beginning May 1, 2022.  Appointment to Associate Dean is normally a five-year term (renewable).


About the Academic Unit

FED (https://carleton.ca/engineering-design/ ) is a dynamic, innovative, and cross‐disciplinary unit that has undergraduate and graduate programs in Aerospace, Biomedical, Civil, Electrical and Computer, Environmental, Infrastructure Protection and International Security, Materials, Mechanical, Sustainable Energy Engineering and Technology Innovation Management. With over 6,000 undergraduate students, 1,200 graduate students, and 180 engineering academics, Carleton encourages creative risk-taking in education and generate transformative knowledge. While FED has offered MEng programs since 1987, these students are increasingly internationally educated engineers seeking a Canadian degree to improve their employment prospects. The Program Director is a new position to transition our program to be more focused on helping these modern student cohorts be successful.


Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in engineering, be a strong academic and will have a commitment to the development and operations of excellence in a course-based graduate program. In particular, the candidate should have experience in aspects of developing and administrating an MEng and/or graduate programs; developing syllabus to meet learning objectives and graduate program requirements; operationalizing an expansion plan for the program resulting in offering of an efficient and attractive program in-line with the market demand; recruiting of international students; and building administrative processes to allow the program to be scaled up. Special emphasis will be on producing high quality graduates of this program that will enhance FED’s reputation. Besides teaching in this program, the Program Director will be required to be an active and exceptional engineering researcher, as well have a strong record as a teacher and promote excellence in teaching. Reporting to the Dean of Engineering, the Associate Dean (Director: Master of Engineering – Engineering Practice) will provide strategic and operational leadership for the program.

Membership in a Canadian professional engineering association is required at the time of appointment.
