Position Description

The Department of Civil Engineering, Schulich School of Engineering, at the University of Calgary invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching) in Civil Engineering/Engineering.

The Schulich School of Engineering and Department of Civil Engineering are interested in applicants with a demonstrated background and ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in core engineering and civil engineering.  In particular, the successful applicant will be expected to teach fundamental courses in ethics and the engineering profession at the undergraduate and graduate level. The candidate will be expected to teach to large classes across multiple platforms, including online and in person teaching modalities.  In addition, the applicant will be expected to contribute to common core undergraduate and graduate teaching through courses such as project management for engineers, introduction to project management and/or engineering safety.

The ability to teach more advanced courses in engineering project management is an asset. The assistant professor (teaching) will be responsible for creation and delivery of courses to undergraduate students as well as students in the course-based MEng (Civil Engineering) program and support active-learning and innovation in teaching and curriculum design.  Scholarly activity related to engineering education and pedagogy is strongly encouraged.  In addition, assistant professors in the teaching focused stream are expected to contribute to the mentoring and supervision of undergraduate and graduate projects, university service, and community engagement.  The successful candidate will support and contribute to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility and foster a positive working and learning environment.

To be eligible for consideration, candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in Engineering and a graduate level degree related to Engineering, Engineering Education and/or Project Management; preference will be given to applicants holding a Ph.D. The successful candidate will have a strong interest in undergraduate and graduate education and in the scholarship of teaching and learning, including online teaching.  They will have demonstrated excellence in teaching.  The candidate will show evidence of academic service and community engagement.  They will demonstrate strong oral and written English communication skills.  The successful candidate will have relevant industry experience in engineering.  The candidate will demonstrate commitment to achieving equitable, diverse, inclusive, and accessible practices and respect for different knowledge systems.

The Department of Civil Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering includes faculty of all ranks and is teaching approximately 400 undergraduate and 380 graduate students.  We offer BSc in Civil Engineering with minors in Transportation, Structural, Digital, Energy & Environment, and Biomedical; MEng programs in Civil Engineering with thematic areas of Sustainable Infrastructure & the Built Environment and Water, Climate & Environment: MEng programs in Civil Engineering in Project Management, and MSc and PhD programs in major areas of civil specialization.  In addition, Civil Engineering supports common core teaching across the engineering disciplines, notably in Project Management and Ethics & Professionalism, as well as supports teaching in the BSc in Sustainable Systems Engineering.
