The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) invites applications for a tenure-track position in the School of Business at the rank of Assistant Professor, with exceptional candidates at the Associate Professor level in the Sustainable Business area, with a proposed starting date of January 1, 2025. The topics in this area include but are not limited to: carbon pricing, corporate responsibility, circular economy, green marketing, and ESG governance. This is an intentional diversity hiring position.

The School is in the Faculty of Business and Economics that has the mission to create, translate, and mobilize knowledge of sustainable business management practices and economic development in rural and remote locations in the global economy. The mission of the school is to work with our communities and businesses to achieve excellence in sustainable business management practices and education. Our school offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, including BComm, Graduate Certificate in Change Leadership, MBA, and MScBA. We strive to incorporate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into the business curriculum. More specifically, the School currently focuses on UNSDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Ranked as one of Canada’s best small universities, the University of Northern British Columbia is a research-intensive university with an enrolment of over 3500 students in more than 40 undergraduate and graduate academic programs. UNBC has embarked on a new strategic plan that is fully integrated into the School of Business .

The successful candidate for this position will be expected to help build and expand the sustainable business discipline in the School, as well as contribute to excellence in research and scholarship in the areas of sustainable business. The candidate would continue the School of Business’s collaborations with members of the School of Nursing, School of Social Work, School of Engineering, and School of Planning and Sustainability to develop courses in sustainability.

Candidates must hold a PhD in Business (or related field) or a PhD in Sustainability (or related field) and a Master level degree in Business. Candidates near the completion of their PhD are encouraged to apply providing the requirements for the PhD degree will be completed within a year. Commencement of the appointment will be contingent on the completion of the PhD.

Successful candidates for the position must have:

  • Demonstrated research in the areas related to Sustainable business.
  • Demonstrated through research or teaching the ability to integrate economic, environmental, and social issues of sustainability and their relation to the business discipline.
  • Demonstrated and/or obtained clear potential to develop an independent and robust research program.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with Faculty within and outside of the business school in teaching, research, and service.
  • Demonstrated desire to build the Sustainability discipline in the School of Business.
  • Demonstrated desire to contribute to service.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a teaching team to ensure consistency across sections in a multi-section course.
