The Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning (CTL) at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor with a specialization in Science Education. The appointment will commence on July 1, 2024, or shortly thereafter.

Candidates must have earned a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in Science Education or a closely related field by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter. Candidates must have a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching in the field of science education, including expertise in one or more of the following areas: environmental and sustainability education; Indigenous knowledges and science education; secondary science education subjects such as biology, chemistry, physics and/or general science; and elementary science education.

We seek applicants whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance existing departmental strengths . The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research, and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees.

The successful candidate will demonstrate instructional expertise in science teacher education, a strong commitment to social justice and equity, and the ability to work in diverse contexts and with diverse student populations.  The successful candidate will be committed to the academic success of all of our students and foster an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates diversity and differences. A teaching certificate in science would be an asset for this position.

Evidence of excellence in teaching at the university level is required, and will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference.

Responsibilities of the position will include developing and maintaining an externally funded research program, undertaking graduate supervision and teaching in graduate programs including teacher education, and working collaboratively with related units across OISE and the University of Toronto. In addition, candidates who can contribute to OISE’s Centre for Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education are especially welcome. 

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. 

The Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning offers graduate programs in Language and Literacies Education, Curriculum and Pedagogy, and the Master of Teaching, a two-year initial teacher education program.
