The School of Public Policy and Administration (SPPA) at Carleton University invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor with research expertise in how inequalities experienced by underrepresented groups and Indigenous peoples are perpetuated by the state and society, and may be addressed by public policies, effective 1 July 2022. The scholar’s substantive area of expertise may include social policy, health policy, environmental policy, housing policy, or economic development. Through teaching, and supervision, the successful candidate will participate in the development and delivery of the School’s graduate programs and in the Bachelor of Public Affairs and Policy Management (BPAPM).

The School’s teaching load is two courses per term for a total of four courses per year. This position will involve teaching two courses per year for SPPA and two courses per year for the BPAPM. The candidate should also be able to demonstrate potential to contribute to high quality scholarship in their area of specialization, as well as contribute to graduate teaching, advising, and mentoring that supports diverse, equitable and inclusive practices.

The research-intensive School , which is situated in a unique Faculty of Public Affairs , is a recognized centre of academic excellence in public policy and administration. It is the largest and oldest school of its kind in Canada and is well known internationally. The School’s multidisciplinary faculty members are actively engaged in diverse research and teaching initiatives, and are regularly called upon for their expertise by government departments, NGOs, and international agencies. The BPAPM program, housed in the Arthur Kroeger College of Public Affairs, is the only multidisciplinary undergraduate program in public policy in Canada. It is a limited-cohort degree program in which students study a core of public policy courses and have the opportunity to specialize in several fields. Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in any social science field relating to inequality and public policy by date of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. These fields may include Economics, Political Science, Public Policy, Sociology, or  related disciplines. Candidates must have demonstrated promise of excellence in research and teaching related to policy and inequalities. The ideal candidate’s research should focus on the ways in which public policy can foster a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive society. Through their research and teaching, the hire will create and oversee classrooms in which issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion are addressed in their courses and our programs as a whole.
