Description:

The Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning (CTL) at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor with a specialization in Language Teaching and Learning in Multilingual Settings. The appointment will commence on July 1, 2024, or shortly thereafter.

Candidates must have earned a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in Applied Linguistics, Second Language Studies, Didactique des langues, Educational Linguistics, or a closely related field by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter. Candidates must have a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching with a strong portfolio in some or all of the following areas: the learning, teaching, and/or assessment of additional languages in diverse settings; language-education curriculum and programming; the development of bilingual and plurilingual competencies; and the preparation of future language educators. The successful candidate will have a scholarly focus that recognizes the interrelationship between language and literacies, and which adopts multilingual and/or plurilingual perspectives to address the teaching and learning of Indigenous languages, International or ‘heritage’ languages, sign languages, French as a second language, or English as a second or additional language. We welcome applications from candidates whose scholarship focuses on K-12 or adult educational contexts.

We seek applicants whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance existing strengths in CTL’s Language and Literacies Education (LLE) program. LLE faculty comprise a community of scholars and educators who embrace multi/plurilingualism and multiliteracies, and who share an explicit commitment to non-deficit framings of language education, particularly in the case of racially and/or linguistically minoritized language users, learners, and educators. To that end, we seek a colleague whose research and teaching will enhance our efforts to build equitable educational and professional environments for learners from diverse backgrounds.

The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research, and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. Candidates must demonstrate involvement in the development and management of large-scale research projects or collaborations in areas related to the focus of this position. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees.

Evidence of excellence in teaching at the university level is required, and will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted with the application, as well as strong letters of reference.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses and supervise students in LLE graduate degree programs (MA, MEd, and PhD). Our course-based Master of Education program has a Language Teaching stream that is growing rapidly. Successful candidates should demonstrate their experience in contributing to the design, revision and/or leadership of graduate-level language teacher education programs. In addition, to support our vibrant thesis-track Master of Arts and doctoral programs, a track-record of effectively supervising graduate students or actively participating in graduate supervision activities, such as co-supervision, serving on thesis committees, contributing to final oral exam committees, supervising research practicums, etc.) will be considered advantageous.

Our graduate programs attract exceptional students who are plurilingual and pluricultural, and who have roots all over the world. The successful candidate must therefore demonstrate a record of successful university teaching that is linguistically and culturally sustaining and uplifting. The successful candidate will be committed to the academic success of all of our students and foster an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates diversity and differences. The demonstrated ability to teach and work effectively in an English-language work environment is essential. International teaching experience, the ability to teach in French, knowledge of additional languages, and/or international teaching experience would all be assets for this position. The ability to contribute to collaborative specializations in which LLE participates would also be an asset.

Other responsibilities of the position include service to CTL and to OISE, and it is expected that the successful candidate will work effectively, respectfully, and collaboratively in diverse, multicultural, and inclusive settings.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
