About the Position:

The Department of Earth Sciences at Carleton University invites applications from qualified candidates for a preliminary (tenure-track) appointment in Environmental Sedimentary Geochemistry at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning July 1, 2022.

The Department is interested in candidates that integrate sedimentary systems and surficial materials (soils, glacial tills, mine tailings) research with applied environmental geochemistry to document inorganic or biogeochemical processes occurring at or near the sediment-water interface and governing the mobility or sequestration of metals, metalloids or organic compounds in soils; sediments from terrestrial, lake, peatland or other environments; or mine waste. The candidate will be committed to effective teaching of core course offerings in Environmental Geochemistry and an Environmental Field course at the undergraduate and graduate level, launch a vigorous research program through which graduate students will be supervised, and to supervise 4th year theses in the Earth Sciences B. About the Academic Unit:

The undergraduate offerings of the Department of Earth Sciences, which feature a strong fieldwork component, include B.Sc. programs (Honors, Major and General), as well as concentrations in Resource Economics (Honors), Resource Valuation (Honors), Geophysics (Honors) and Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoecology (Honors). The Honors programs meet the academic requirements for Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) accreditation. Other programs include Combined Honors with Biology, Chemistry or Physical Geography. At the graduate level, the Department offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs. The department, as well as portions of Institute of Environmental and Interdisciplinary Sciences, Geography and Environmental Studies, and the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Ottawa comprise the Ottawa-Carleton Geoscience Center (OCGC), a collaborative research and graduate institution. Available research facilities within the OCGC include IRMS, TIMS, MC-ICP-MS, AMS, noble gases mass spectrometry, (laser ablation) ICP-MS and ICP-OES laboratories and associated clean labs; XRF, XRD, CT, SEM, particle size, gamma spectrometry, and electron microprobe laboratories, as well as fluid inclusion, cathodoluminescence, and fluorescence microscopy. In addition, the main headquarters of the Geological Survey of Canada, the Canadian Museum of Nature, and several other federal, science-based agencies who are significant research collaborators are located in Ottawa.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences (or related field) by the time of appointment, and possess a strong commitment to research and scholarship as reflected in peer-reviewed publications, and have demonstrated excellence in teaching. The successful candidate will have the ability to develop an externally-funded, high-quality research program; will be committed to effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels; and will contribute effectively to the academic life of the Department. Proficiency in English is a requirement.
